The feud between Washington and Robert De Niro continues as the Oscar-winning actor continues to speak out against the Trump administration.
President Donald Trump’s Homeland Security Adviser and Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller criticized De Niro in an interview on “Hannity,” calling the 82-year-old actor a “sad, bitter, broken old man” who “degrades himself on camera in one horrible movie after another.”
“He hasn’t made a movie worth watching in at least 30 years,” Miller added.
The comments came after De Niro appeared on MSNBC on October 19 to discuss the recent No Kings Day protests and harshly criticize Miller, calling him a “Goebbelsian” of the Trump administration. Paul Goebbels was the Nazi Party’s chief propagandist and one of Hitler’s closest and most passionate followers. “(He’s) a Nazi!” De Niro said. “Yes, he is Jewish. He should be ashamed of himself.”
De Niro, a longtime Trump critic, also spoke out about the president, sharing his concerns that the president will seek to remain in office after his second term ends in January 2029. “We cannot let our guard down,” he said.
Asked about De Niro’s comments, Miller responded: “He’s not taken seriously by anyone. He’s not accepted by his family, his friends, his community. He’s an empty shell and everyone ignores what he has to say.” He added that the “Godfather” actor has experienced “the longest series of failures, failures and embarrassments” of the past 30 years.
USA TODAY has reached out to De Niro’s representatives for comment.
Although De Niro has starred in lower-rated comedies such as Meet the Fockers and Dirty Grandpa in recent years, De Niro’s work over the past 30 years has also included Oscar-nominated films such as Oscar-winners The Unique Playbook and Joker, and more recently, The Irishman and Killers of the Flower Moon.
