What happened to Kim Kardashian?
Kim Kardashian has been diagnosed with a small brain aneurysm, she said in a sneak preview of the Season 7 premiere of Hulu’s reality show “The Kardashians” on Oct. 23.
What is a cerebral aneurysm?
According to the Cleveland Clinic, a brain aneurysm is a bulge or weak spot in a blood vessel, usually in or around the brain. Although most brain aneurysms are small, a ruptured brain aneurysm can be life-threatening.
Who does a brain aneurysm affect most?
According to the Mayo Clinic, brain aneurysms are more common in women than men and are more common in adults between the ages of 30 and 60.
What are the common symptoms?
According to the Mayo Clinic, small brain aneurysms that don’t rupture usually don’t cause symptoms. However, the Cleveland Clinic advises that minor symptoms, such as a headache, may occur before a major rupture.
A ruptured brain aneurysm is a serious condition that can cause internal bleeding and requires immediate treatment.
According to the Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic, common symptoms include:
- severe headache
- nausea and vomiting
- stiff shoulders
- Weakness and/or numbness
- Blurred or double vision
- seizure
- light sensitivity
- confusion
- pain above and behind the eyes
- loss of consciousness
- Eyelids droop and pupils dilate
How is a brain aneurysm treated?
A ruptured brain aneurysm must be treated immediately, usually requiring emergency surgery. The Cleveland Clinic urges people to call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room if they develop symptoms. The need for treatment of unruptured cerebral aneurysms is evaluated on a case-by-case basis and may include long-term monitoring.
Does stress cause brain aneurysms?
According to the Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic, brain aneurysms occur when the walls of arteries in the brain become thinner and weaker. Various risk factors may be involved in the occurrence of this problem, including:
- Family history of cerebral aneurysms
- smoking
- certain health conditions
- drug use, especially cocaine
- high blood pressure
- heavy use of alcohol
How is a brain aneurysm diagnosed?
A CT scan of the brain is usually the first step in diagnosing an aneurysm or hemorrhage, according to the University of Michigan Health.
“When an aneurysm is diagnosed, cerebral angiography is performed to better understand the aneurysm,” UM said. “During this procedure, dye is injected into your bloodstream and X-rays are taken. This gives our team information about how to best treat your condition.”
