Federal authorities have announced multiple indictments charging more than 30 people in connection with a widespread illegal gambling scheme that allegedly involved current and former NBA players as well as members of New York organized crime families.

Dozens of defendants, including Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and former NBA player Damon Jones, are charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, money laundering, illegal gambling and racketeering.

The charges stem from separate but related federal investigations into fraudulent illegal poker games allegedly involving members of the Bonano, Gambino and Genovese organized crime families and a sports betting conspiracy that exploited confidential NBA information, Joseph Nocera Jr., the attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said in a press conference on Oct. 23. Three people were charged with both offenses, Nocera said.
