Problem solved, USA TODAY
Do you have a pet dog, cat, or furry friend? Chances are, they’ve made their presence known in your car, leaving hair all over the seats. But how can we get it out?
The inside of your car needs to be kept just as clean as the outside. Car washes work on the exterior of cars. Working on the interior requires more effort and tools to reach every nook and cranny. It takes the same amount of effort to remove pet hair.
How do I remove pet hair from my car?
The American Kennel Club recommends grooming your dog regularly to prevent hair from building up inside your vehicle. This requires washing and brushing your pet frequently.
Seat covers are another way to prevent hair buildup, but hair can still become trapped in the seats. The AKC said if pet hair gets stuck in the seats, it’s best to remove the hair from a large area and then move it to a small crevice in the car.
Home cleaning brand TruEarth recommends using multiple tools and methods to completely remove pet hair. Drying methods include running a lint roller or brush over the upholstery to remove loose hair. For wet applications, the brand recommends mixing 1 part fabric softener and 3 parts water in a spray bottle, misting the inside, then wiping with a dry cloth.
According to the website, “fabric softener helps relax hair and release it from fabric.”
What other tools can I use to remove pet hair?
Biggs Mobile Detailing, a Washington-based auto repair company, said vacuuming is “one of the best ways” to remove pet hair. Most vacuum cleaners are suitable for the job with attachments suitable for getting into small crevices.
According to the company, “Using a lifting motion when vacuuming your car’s carpet, you can lift loose hairs from the carpet fibers and remove them.” “Avoid scrubbing your carpet using a hard plastic vacuum head as this can damage the carpet.”
In addition to a vacuum cleaner, other creative tools that many pet owners should have are a handheld cleaning brush and a pumice stone for pet hair.
Cleaning brushes generate static electricity, which can cause pet hair to stick to the brush or be pulled from the seat. Some have a rubber surface that can remove surface hair. Detailers add that hair cleaning stones are great for removing stubborn pet hair, as is common pumice stone found in plumbing passageways.
What breed of dog or cat sheds the most hair?
According to pet food company Purina, when it comes to cats, Persian, Birman, Himalayan, and Turkish Angora cats shed the most of all cat breeds. In the case of dogs, 50 breeds are considered heavy shedding, including Afghan Hounds, German Shepherds, and Huskies.
