The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Wednesday that Tesla Inc TSLA.O is recalling 12,963 vehicles in the United States due to a defective battery pack component that could cause a sudden loss of power.

An issue in some 2025 Model 3 and 2026 Model Y vehicles could prevent drivers from accelerating the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash, regulators said.

Tesla has announced that it will replace contactors in affected battery packs free of charge. The company did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

As of Oct. 7, Tesla said it had identified 36 warranty claims and 26 field reports related to the condition, but was not aware of any crashes, injuries or fatalities related to the defect.

Earlier this month, the National Automobile Safety Administration announced it would launch an investigation into 2.88 million Tesla cars equipped with fully self-driving systems after reports of more than 50 traffic safety violations and a series of crashes.

The investigation comes amid increased Congressional scrutiny of Tesla’s advanced driver assistance systems and weeks after a new NHTSA administrator was confirmed.

The company is scheduled to release third-quarter results after the market closes on Wednesday.
