The Winn-Dixie brand is gaining momentum.

Southeastern Grocers, which owns the Harvey’s Supermarkets and Winn-Dixie chains in the South, will change its name to The Winn-Dixie Company and move its stores outside of Florida and Georgia.

The Jacksonville, Fla.-based company also plans to increase its focus on the Sunshine State, where the forerunner of Winn-Dixie was founded in Miami in 1925. As part of that strategy, the company announced the acquisition of three Hitchcock Markets in Florida. Winn-Dixie stores in the northern Florida cities of Alachua, Keystone Heights and Williston will open in stages over the next few months.

Winn-Dixie’s reorganization includes the sale and closure of some stores.

Winn-Dixie has also reached or is currently working on the sale of 32 Winn-Dixie stores and eight Harvey’s supermarkets in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi. Some stores were sold to Food City and Piggly Wiggly. Store relocations and closures are expected to be completed by early 2026, the company said.

“As we enter our next 100 years as a brand new 100-year-old Winn-Dixie Company, we are accelerating growth where our roots are deepest, while staying true to our purpose of feeding and enriching the communities, families and neighborhoods that have supported us for generations,” Southeastern Grocers CEO and Chairman Anthony Hacker said in a statement. Mr. Hacker will remain Winn-Dixie’s CEO and chairman.

Earlier this year, Hacker and a group of private investors acquired Southeastern Grocers from Aldi US, which also acquired the company and its supermarket chains Winn-Dixie and Harvey’s in a deal that closed in March 2024.. In this transaction, Southeastern acquired approximately 170 grocery stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi, in addition to its existing Winn-Dixie liquor store operations.

The Winn-Dixie Company will continue to operate approximately 220 Winn-Dixie and Harvey’s stores until each store closes due to conversion to the Aldi format. Meredith Hurley, a spokeswoman for Southeastern Grocers, told USA TODAY that in early 2026, Winn-Dixie will begin converting “some Harveys supermarkets into Winn-Dixie stores in the market format that best meets the needs of our customers and communities.”

After restructuring, Winn-Dixie Company will operate approximately 130 traditional grocery stores and 140 free-standing and grocery-adjacent liquor stores in Florida and Georgia.

Employees at stores that are closing, such as Winn-Dixie in Williston, Fla., “will have the opportunity to continue serving customers in new locations,” the company said, referring to the Hitchcocks Market that will open in the city in early December.

Which Winn-Dixie and Harveys supermarkets might be sold or closed?
