AI adoption in China has reached unprecedented levels, with the country’s generative artificial intelligence user base doubling to 515 million in just six months, according to a report released by the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC).
This dramatic expansion means that the adoption rate will reach 36.5% in the first half of 2025, making China a powerful force in the global AI landscape. A CNNIC report released on Saturday revealed that China’s AI adoption more than doubled from the end of December 2024 to June 2025.
This growth trajectory is driven by what the report describes as “advanced infrastructure and state encouragement,” highlighting the rapid integration of AI technologies into Chinese society.
User demographic profile
The survey of 30,000 respondents across 31 states revealed clear patterns in who is adopting these technologies. The user base is dominated by young and middle-aged professionals, with 74.6% of all users under the age of 40.
Educational level also plays an important role, as individuals with degrees from higher education institutions account for 37.5% of the total user base. This population concentration suggests that AI adoption in China is currently strongest among digitally native and educated people who are in a position to leverage these tools in professional and personal contexts.
Domestic models dominate market preferences
Perhaps most notably, the report found that more than 90% of respondents said their first choice was a domestic AI model. This preference for homegrown solutions reflects both the Chinese government’s strategic emphasis on technological independence and the practical reality that leading US models such as OpenAI and Google DeepMind are officially blocked on the mainland.
China’s AI platforms are effectively filling this void. Models such as DeepSeek, Alibaba Cloud’s Qwen and ByteDance’s Doubao are “exploding in popularity among Chinese users,” the South China Morning Post reported. Alibaba Cloud serves as the AI and cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group Holding.

Despite limited access to US-based AI models, the Chinese market has already established itself as the world’s largest market. A Microsoft study released in September found that China’s AI user base is estimated to exceed 195 million people as of June 2024. The company’s research utilized a metric that quantifies China’s AI adoption as the percentage of the working-age population that actively uses AI tools.
Microsoft’s research identified key inflection points. The launch of DeepSeek’s R1 model in January 2025 more than doubled AI adoption in China to 20% in the following six months. By comparison, the U.S. maintained a relatively stable adoption rate of about 25% over the past year.
