Selena Gomez said she compared the two businesswomen’s beauty brands following Hailey Bieber’s response to a recent interview question.

The Only Murders in the Building star seemed to gloss over a question about Gomez’s Rare Beauty brand in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

“Leave the girls alone,” Gomez, 33, wrote in a since-deleted Instagram Story, according to E!. news.

“She can say whatever she wants. She has no influence on (my) life. Only relevance, not intelligence. Please be kind. Every brand inspires me. There’s room for everyone,” Gomez wrote in the post, according to the newspaper. “And hopefully we can all stop.”

In an interview with WSJ published on October 14, Bieber was asked about possible comparisons between skin care brands Lorde and Rare Beauty.

“It’s always frustrating to be pitted against other people. That’s not what I’m looking for,” Bieber, 28, said. “When people want to see you a certain way and they’ve created a story about you in their minds, it’s not your responsibility to change it.”

USA TODAY reached out to Gomez’s representatives on Saturday, October 18, but did not receive a response. A representative for Bieber declined to comment for this story.

Feud sparked by eyebrow posts in 2023

Before Hailey Bieber married singer Justin Bieber in 2018, the “Swag” singer famously dated Gomez.

Rumors of a rift between the two have long been dispelled, but dissatisfied fans reignited the rumors in February 2023 after the infamous eyebrow scandal.

That same month, Gomez posted a TikTok video in which she told fans she “accidentally over-laminated my eyebrows.” Hours later, Bieber’s best friend Kylie Jenner posted a selfie on her Instagram Story with the caption, “Was this an accident???” I put the words on her eyebrow. Jenner later posted a screenshot of her Facetime with Bieber that showed off her eyebrows, leading internet users to speculate that the two were throwing shade at Gomez.

A month later, Gomez wrote on her Instagram Story that Bieber reached out to her after the rumors escalated into an online hate war between fans.

“Hailey Bieber contacted me to let me know that she continues to receive death threats and hateful negative comments,” Gomez wrote. “This is not something I stand for. No one should experience hate or bullying. I’ve always advocated for kindness, but I really want things like this to stop.”
