A Maryland man used his grandson’s age to ensure he won the lottery.
John Lang of Essex used a special strategy when he bought the Bonus Match 5 ticket at Mace Liquors in Baltimore County, Maryland Lottery officials said in an Oct. 14 news release.
Mr. Lang told lottery officials that he varies the ages of his grandchildren.
“For example, if a 20-year-old grandchild turns 21, the next day we would remove number 20 from the rotation and change him to number 21,” according to the release.
Essex, an unincorporated community in Baltimore County, is approximately 9 miles by car from Baltimore City.
What will John Lang do with his winnings?
Lang told lottery officials that he returned to Mace Liquors the next day and learned he had won the top prize.
“They said, ‘Mr. John, you just won $50,000,'” he recalled.
According to the Maryland Lottery website, the odds of winning the game with a $1 ticket are 1 in 575,757.
The retiree told lottery officials that he would save some of his winnings and invest them in improvements to his home.
