SpaceX’s Starship mega-rocket is undergoing its 11th test flight on the launch pad, preparing for Monday night’s launch. Launch slots open at 7:15pm ET.
This launch will be the fifth test flight in 2025. The spacecraft is expected to take astronauts to the moon and eventually Mars.
SpaceX is developing Starship as a fully reusable transportation system. This means the rocket and vehicle can return to the ground for additional missions. In the coming years, Starship will play a pivotal role in future U.S. spaceflight.
Starship, built by Elon Musk’s spaceflight company SpaceX, has faced numerous challenges and successes over its 10 test flights. Although they faced explosions and setbacks, they were able to successfully re-enter, capture their boosters, and even reuse them.
How many Starship test flights were conducted?
We will introduce the details of each test flight of SpaceX Starship.
How is Starship different from other heavy goods vehicles?
Starship Version 2 is the largest and most powerful rocket ever built, standing 403 feet tall when stacked. Version 3, which will debut on flight 12, is even larger, standing at 408 feet tall.
NASA’s Space Launch System for the Artemis mission consists of the rocket itself and the Orion spacecraft. The Artemis mission is the U.S. space agency’s ambitious goal to not only return humans to the moon, but also establish a permanent presence there. In the coming years, this initiative could lay the foundations for long-term human settlement in our celestial neighbor and serve as a base for future human missions to Mars.
The Artemis II mission is expected to launch by April 2026 at the latest, with four astronauts accompanying them on a 10-day journey around the moon (but not landing), NASA officials said. Starship is a fully reusable system designed to transport crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Starship is currently the most powerful rocket ever developed, with 1.7 million pounds of thrust.
Musk hopes to send the first unmanned spacecraft to Mars by the end of 2026. That timeline is consistent with an orbital alignment around the sun that shortens the journey between Earth and Mars.
Where will Starship be launched?
Starship will launch from Starbase, SpaceX’s headquarters in south Texas.
Founded on May 3, 2025, Starbase is located in unincorporated Cameron County, just across the Rio Grande from Mexico. As a result of the successful special election of incorporation, the city now covers approximately 1.5 square miles and is approximately 32 miles from Brownsville, which has a population of approximately 186,000.
Starbase includes a SpaceX construction and launch site, employee housing, an Ad Astra private school, and various other facilities.

SpaceX plans to use the flight test to collect data that will inform the next design of the lower stage rocket booster, known as Super Heavy, while stress testing the upper stage rocket’s heat shield. The company also detailed plans for the upper stage, known simply as Starship, to attempt the air maneuvers necessary to one day be able to return to its launch site.
The upper stage aims to re-land in the Indian Ocean.
SpaceX also plans to use a super-heavy booster for the second time in its history. It has already been test-flighted on Starship. In addition, 24 of the SpaceX Raptor family’s 33 engines will be “flight proven,” SpaceX said.
For the third time in a row, the booster will not return to its launch site, instead landing in the Gulf of Mexico (now renamed the Gulf of America) as SpaceX seeks to push its performance beyond previous attempts.
How can I watch the launch?
The launch window is set to open at 7:15pm ET. Webcast begins 30 minutes early. You can watch it on the SpaceX website
