Injury update for Tanner Scott, who was removed from the MLB playoff roster as a relief pitcher for the Dodgers.

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Dodgers are not using closer Tanner Scott this postseason and no longer trust him to pitch in key situations, so they removed him from their postseason roster Thursday before Game 4 of the National League Division Series against the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Dodgers received permission from MLB to remove him from the roster and replace him with left-handed reliever Justin Robleski.

Scott, who signed a four-year, $72 million free agent contract, will not be eligible to pitch for the Dodgers until the World Series if the Dodgers advance.

Scott, who only briefly warmed up for the National League Wild Card Series against the Cincinnati Reds, suffered an “abscess incision” in his lower body, which Dodgers manager Dave Roberts announced was a minor surgery.

“To be honest, I don’t know much about it,” Roberts said. “But I know he’s recovering well. And it happened (Wednesday) night. That’s kind of our situation.”

Scott complained of discomfort during the Dodgers’ practice at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday night and was not at the ballpark at all on Wednesday.

“I think there were some signs in the evening of training,” Roberts said. “I think for us, that was the first thing that came to light…I don’t think we knew exactly the extent of it. I hadn’t even met him. I think it was more doctor-driven.”

If the Dodgers had known Scott would need medical attention, they would have formally asked MLB to remove him from the roster before Game 3. Three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw shouldn’t have needed to pitch two innings on Wednesday, allowing six hits and five runs (four earned).

Scott, who had eight saves during the season and lost his job to rookie Aki Sasaki in the postseason, could still return to the roster if the Dodgers advance to the World Series, Roberts insisted. However, given Scott’s struggles and currently being waived, he will likely pitch his final pitch in 2025.

Scott’s absence didn’t change Roberts’ confidence in the bullpen, and he decided to have starting pitcher Emmett Sheehan and Sasaki pitch as relief pitchers in key situations. The Dodgers’ traditional relievers have only gotten 12 outs in the first three games against the Phillies.

“I’m very confident in our bullpen,” Roberts said. “I feel like everyone in the pens is available. We’ve got to have confidence in our veterans, we’ve got to set the tone, and we’re very confident that we’ll be ready for (Thursday). We’ll see the best of us.”
