On Oct. 8, authorities said a gunman shot and killed three people at separate locations in the Houston area before killing himself.
“We have a very tragic incident today and there are some moving parts,” Houston Police Department Lt. Larry Crowson told reporters at a news conference just hours after the incident.
The incident began just before 1 p.m. on Oct. 8, when officers responded to a shooting near Dairy Ashford Road and Interstate 90 in Sugar Land, Texas, about 30 miles southwest of downtown Houston. Sugar Land police say they found a woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the driver’s seat of a white SUV that had run off the road.
The incident was initially thought to be related to street violence. But then the Sugar Land Police Department announced on Oct. 8 that it had learned that the woman and the shooting suspect were in a relationship.
“This incident was not a random act of road rage,” the department said in a news release posted on Facebook. The woman was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Clawson said officers then received a report of shots fired at a mechanic shop in southwest Houston, about 10 minutes east of where the first shooting occurred, around 1:30 p.m.
“There were reports that a man in a silver Ford Escape matching the description of the vehicle in the Sugar Land shooting got into an altercation with a mechanic,” Crowson said. The mechanic died, he added.
As the suspect began to flee the scene, another person came out of an adjacent warehouse and began recording the suspect leaving, Crowson said.
“The suspect then fired several shots, killing the witness,” he said.
The suspect then drove to an area about 2.5 miles north of the repair shop, where police received a report of another shooting, Crowson said. Arriving officers found the suspect inside the vehicle and said he had died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police have not released further details about the victim or suspect. The connection between the shootings remains unclear.
Crowson stressed that there was no danger to the public, adding that the incident is still under investigation.
