WASHINGTON – Donald Trump’s support has paid off in Tennessee.

The president’s favourite candidate, Matt Van Epps, won the special election in the Republican primary on October 7th, filling the vacant US home seat with Mark Green.

Van Epps defeated eight other Republicans for the nomination and is currently opposed to the Democratic primary winner and Tennessee Sen. Aftin Bain in the December 2nd general election.

Van Epps is preferred to win that race in the 7th Congress district seat, representing Davidson, Williamson, Montgomery and parts of 11 other counties.

Last November, Greene cruised to re-elect in the fourth term with almost 60% of the vote. Green, chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, resigned from Congress in July to pursue private sector opportunities.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee appointed Van Epps late last year and served as commissioner for the state’s general services department. He previously served as the top coordinator for Covid-19 response in Tennessee.

Trump’s support proved crucial in the Tennessee election. State Sen. Lee Reeves and businessman Stuart Cooper paused their campaign last week after the president weighed in.

Van Epps had framed his campaign on his service as a US Army helicopter combat pilot and his support for Trump. A local military veteran filed a complaint with the Tennessee State Guard against Van Epps, alleging inappropriate use of his military uniform in a campaign ad in violation of Pentagon rules.

Tennessee’s election winner is a Republican and is extremely important to Mike Johnson’s Chamber of Commerce’s ability to lead the Chamber of Commerce. Republicans currently hold a thin majority in the House, 219-214.
