10 common car dashboard warning lights explained

Imagine driving down the road when the lights suddenly appear on your dashboard.

For some, it’s easy to understand what symbols mean and which actions to take next. But many are unclear as to what they are looking at.

Research by Goodyear Auto Service and Just Tyres shows that young drivers are less familiar with dashboard symbols than emoji symbols. The survey concluded that 88% of young adults can identify emojis, compared to 51% of young adults who can identify vehicle warning signs.

These symbols, often referred to as “idiot lights” (think dummy warning signs), are intended to be easy to understand. But it’s not that easy for many drivers, both young and old.

According to AutoZone, there are 10 dashboard symbols and meanings.

Abdominal light

This symbol indicates that the anti-lock brake computer has set up the code and requires a professional diagnosis.

Glow plug

This symbol is intended only for diesel vehicles, meaning that the engine will be warmer and the driver will not start the engine until the light goes out.

Fog light

When this symbol is activated, the fog light will be illuminated.

Brake system

The Brake System icon indicates one of three potential issues with parking brakes turned on: a braking system issue, or a low liquid, or an ABS issue.

By Ajar

When the car door is open, this icon will confirm that the driver is aware of it. Leave the door open overnight to drain the battery.

Laundry fluid reminder

This symbol indicates low washer fluid. Fill the vehicle’s hood with the washing machine fluid reservoir. A symbol is required for caps that refill the reservoir.

Tire pressure monitoring system

The driver must check the tire pressure or tire sensor operation when this icon is activated. Some vehicles may allow the operator to manually reset the warning light, while others may require service.

Cruise Control

This symbol indicates that cruise control is set while driving.

Battery/Charging Alert

This icon indicates that the voltage level is below the normal level and the vehicle’s charging system is not functioning properly. Autozone recommends checking the battery terminals, alternator belts and battery status.

Engine Cooling System

Engine cooling systems, or coolant temperature warnings, will show light when the temperature exceeds normal limits. Check the fan operation, radiator cap, coolant leak, and coolant level.

When the lights are on, it is generally best to check out the issue. Warning lights don’t always mean the worst. Sometimes the wire may break down or the sensor may be bad.

But taking a chance doesn’t make sense.
