At least four people were injured in the UK early on October 2nd. Police say the man was pedestrian driving outside a Jewish synagogue, and at least one person was stabbed.

The attack occurred around 9:30am local time, authorities said. According to Greater Manchester Police, the suspect was shot by police while responding to an incident at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congress synagogue in Crumpsall, North Manchester.

“They said they received a report from witnesses who saw the car being driven towards members of the public. Police say the four were being treated for injuries from both the vehicle and the stab wound.

The out-of-synagogue incident comes as Jews observe Yom Kipur’s holidays, which ends in the evening of October 1st and the evening of October 2nd.

“I am keenly awaited by the attack at the Synagogue at Krampsor. The fact that this happened at Yom Kipur, the sacred day of the Jewish calendar, makes it even more frightening,” said British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer. “My thoughts are with the loved ones of all the people affected, and my gratitude is to the emergency services and to all first responders.”

Priority said additional police will be deployed at synagogues across the country in response to the incident.

“The public is asked to avoid the community while police continue to deal with the incident,” Manchester Police said.

Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham told the BBC that immediate danger to the public appears to have ended.
