WASHINGTON – Russell Vought, director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, told House Republicans in a private call on Oct. 1 that if government shutdowns continue, a massive federal workers layoffs will begin with “a day or two.”
Vought’s timeline for “forced cuts” of federal workers began in the middle of the night on October 1st as President Donald Trump warned Democrats that it could eliminate “a huge number” of federal workers under government shutdowns.
White House spokesman Caroline Leavitt did not detail which federal departments could be affected or how many workers would be fired during a briefing with reporters. However, she said the layoffs were “immediate.”
Leavitt said Trump has directed the OMB to work with the agency to identify where the cuts can be made. “Unfortunately, they are the result of this government closure,” she said, but she stopped providing an exact deadline. “Two days, immediate,” Levitt said.
Historically, nonessential federal workers have been placed in fur during government shutdowns, but they are not part of a widespread federal workforce layoff. Trump also said he may use government closures to eliminate federal programs he opposes. “Many profits can get off the closure,” Trump said on September 30.
Trump’s threat comes after his administration fired tens of thousands of federal workers already as part of the Department of Government Efficiency efforts to reduce the federal government.
On the first day of the shutdown, Vought announced plans to freeze federal funds allocated to the infrastructure project in New York, home to Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer. Vought said the expansion of New York City’s second Avenue subway and funding for the Hudson River Railroad Tunnel was suspended “to prevent funds from flowing under the unconstitutional DEI principles.”
He later announced that the Trump administration had cancelled $8 billion with “green new fraud funds” for projects in 16 democratically-led states.
