The Smithsonian Institute’s museums, research centres and national zoos remain open this week despite government closures that began midnight on October 1st.

The Smithsonian, a federal agency, posted on its website that it will use money to maintain business from its previous year’s budget, at least until Monday, October 6th.

The Smithsonian features 17 museums in Washington, DC, including the Museum of African American History and Culture, the American Indian Museum, and the Aerospace Museum.

In addition to the National Zoo in Washington, DC, the Smithsonian also has the American Indian Museum and the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum. Only Cooper Hewitt has admission fees. A few other places require a free pass to enter.

Most federal governments were shut down as Democrats and Republicans failed to reach an agreement on a new fiscal year spending plan that began on October 1st.
