Authorities are investigating the deaths at Charlotte Douglas International Airport after the body was found on the stack inside the landing gear on an American Airlines flight on September 28th.
The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Station was found in one of the compartments of the main landing equipment while maintenance crews worked on aircraft arriving from Europe. The person was declared dead at the scene by officers from the police station’s airport department.
CMPD murder unit detectives and crime scene searches responded to the scene and investigated and collected physical evidence along with support from operational commands and medics.
Police said an investigation was underway and the individual’s identity had not been announced as of September 28th. In a statement to USA Today, American Airlines said it is working with law enforcement based on the investigation.
“CLT Airport knows the tragic discoveries involving a deceased individual discovered on the landing gear of an American Airlines aircraft this morning,” an airport spokesman told USA Today in an email. “We are deeply saddened by the news and will assist in the investigation of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Station if necessary.”
Operations at the airport continue as normal, the airport added.
Sneaking into an airplane’s landing gear can be extremely dangerous, health and aviation experts previously told USA Today. These unaccompanied parts of the plane lack oxygen and can reach temperatures well below freezing.
Most seats will die, and the Federal Aviation Administration estimates that more than 76% of deaths will end.
In January, the bodies of two Dominican teenagers were found inside the landing gear of a JetBlue passenger plane at Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport in Florida. The maintenance crew discovered them during regular post-flight inspections of the plane after it arrived from New York. It remains unknown how and when they boarded the plane.
