Explains how it works

Date:

On September 22, President Donald Trump promoted an unproven link between Tylenol and the rise in autism in children, and issued an urgent warning to pregnant mothers.

What do we know about medicines? Tylenol is used to treat several conditions, including mild to moderate pain, fever, headache, muscle pain, toothache, posterior and cold. According to healthcare professionals, traditional over-the-counter painkillers such as acetaminophen and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are safe and effective when employed as directed.

According to the Tufts University School of Medicine, Tylenol was not widely used until 1950, when the prescription drug Tylenol Elixir for children was promoted as an aspirin replacement in 1950. Acetaminophen, often sold under the brand name Tylenol, has long been considered the safest option for managing headaches, fever and other pains during pregnancy.

How does Tylenol (acetaminophen) work in your body?

Tylenol and NSAIDs have low temperatures and relieve pain. They are used to treat different types of pain and are part of different drug classes. One important difference is that Tylenol does not relieve inflammation. nsaids does.

Dr. Anureet Walia, Pain Management Specialist at UI Healthcare, says Tylenol is classified under the umbrella of two other drug classes.

To this day, how acetaminophen works is still a bit of a mystery. Experts know that acetaminophen works only in the central nervous system, while NSAIDs act on the brain and the whole body. Here is the theory of how acetaminophen works in the body:

“Use as directed”: Comparison of Tylenol and NSAIDs

Tylenol and NSAIDs both help with pain perception and fever, but there is one important difference between medications. Obviously, Tylenol does not have anti-inflammatory properties. This means it does not help with swelling or inflammation.

Like all medications, dosage is important. You can receive the full benefits of taking the recommended medication. Always take something like your current condition and pain that your body takes into consideration when choosing between Tylenol and NSAID.

Here’s a comparison of how these drugs work:

Regardless of the type of painkiller, it is important to remember that Tylenol and NSAIDs should only be taken for temporary pain. “If the pain is constant and you’re on a 24-hour basis, then it should actually be a discussion with your doctor about the cause of the pain (and how to best manage it,” Manganese says.

There is no casual link between Tylenol and autism

The American Psychiatric Association has issued the following statement on autism in response to President Trump’s announcement:

“It is essential that the administration prioritizes evidence-based support for individuals on the autism spectrum and invests in long-term, comprehensive research into disability.

“Vaccinations do not cause autism, and claims of such association have been repeatedly trusted in peer-reviewed studies.

“Autism is a complex disorder and it is wrong to imply that a small number of studies have established causal relationships. Strong evidence shows that acetaminophen is safe for use during pregnancy.

The Academy of Obstetricians and Gynecologists said in a September 22 news release:
