According to a US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notification, food distributors in New York have recalled one of their ground cinnamon products due to potential lead contamination.
SLR Food Distribution in Hicksville, New York announced a recall for Wise Wife Brand Ground Cinnamon on Friday, September 26th. The company said products currently being recruited “can be contaminated at high levels of lead.”
Wise Wife Brand Ground cinnamon was distributed to retailers in New Jersey, New York, Florida, Maryland, Minnesota, Oklahoma and Ohio, through February 15, 2024 and June 28, 2024, according to an FDA notice. Cinnamon’s last sales order was distributed on June 28th, with the product being SLR Food Distribution, Inc. It was no longer sold by the federal agency said.
As of September 26, no disease has been reported in connection with recalled ground cinnamon, the company said.
The recall was launched as a result of an analysis conducted by the FDA, and the notification revealed that cinnamon products had high levels of lead. Why is it dangerous to increase lead levels?
According to the FDA, “A short-term exposure to very low levels of lead may not elicit symptoms,” the federal agency added that an increased blood lead concentration could be the only obvious sign of lead exposure. However, additional signs and symptoms are more likely “due to acute exposure to higher levels of lead or chronic exposure.”
Lead can affect almost any body system, but its effects depend not only on the individual’s age and weight, but also on the amount and duration of exposure, according to the FDA. In children, exposure to sufficient lead for weeks to months can cause permanent damage to the central nervous system, leading to learning disabilities, developmental disorders and other long-term health issues, the federal agency added.
In adults, chronic lead exposure is associated with renal dysfunction, hypertension and neurocognitive effects, the FDA said.
