  • President Trump has announced new tariffs on kitchen cabinets, furniture, heavy trucks and branded drugs.
  • Tariffs range from 25% for heavy trucks to 100% for certain drugs.

President Donald Trump announced new tariffs on September 25th, focusing on certain products such as kitchen cabinets and furniture.

“From October 1, 2025, we will impose a 50% tariff on all kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanity and related products. Additionally, we will be charging a 30% tariff on decorated furniture,” Trump said in the Truth Social Post.

In the same series of posts, he announced a 25% tariff on all “heavy (big!) trucks”! ” 100% tariffs on imports and branded drugs.

Trump’s drastic tariffs on countries around the world could be exposed to legal risks from lawsuits headed to the Supreme Court. Reuters reported that these new actions could be part of the Trump administration’s shift to more established legal powers.

Why did Trump impose customs duties on the cabinet?

In his true social post, Trump said the reason for the Cabinet, vanity and furniture tariffs was “a massive “flood” of these products into the United States in other countries. It’s a very unfair practice, but it requires national security and other reasons to be protected.

Trump said in August that he would focus on furniture in a Truth Social Post.

“This will bring the furniture business back to North Carolina, South Carolina, Michigan and statewide states,” he wrote on August 22.

Furniture and wood manufacturing jobs have been cut by half since 2000, Reuters reported, with the US importing about $25.5 billion in furniture in 2024, with more than half of those imports coming from Vietnam and China.

Some furniture executives are worried about rising prices and lack of domestic manufacturing capabilities.

RH RH.N, previously known as repair hardware, “needs years of investment in building most of the facilities and labor in the industry” to strengthen manufacturing in the US, RH.N said.

What is customs duty?

Customs duties are a form of taxes levied on imports from other countries.

While tariffs can generate more demand for domestic manufacturers, experts have previously explained to USA Today, as these companies are also part of the global supply chain, they are affected by tariffs.

Trump has frequently used tariffs as part of foreign policy negotiations in his second term, but many of them have declined or delayed.

In November, the highest court hears arguments for appeals in a lower court decision that Trump overestimated when he invoked the 1977 law to impose tariffs on imports from most countries. In the case of rules against Trump, the administration may need to issue a refund of income collected from about half of the tariffs.
