Experts claim Trump’s autism about Tylenol
Healthcare experts are challenging President Donald Trump’s autism claim and defending Tylenol’s safety during pregnancy.
He carved a familiar point when President Donald Trump revealed his administration’s longstanding discoveries about autism. He resurfaced concerns about the vaccine, as he did early in the COVID-19 pandemic. He said the newborn and toddler vaccines “should be given at lower doses and spread over the years.”
However, the autism conversation was not about vaccines despite the background of health and human services director Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s vaccine skepticism.
RFK Jr. and other Trump administration medical leaders had no effort to address vaccine safety in their remarks at a September 22 press conference. Instead, they identified Tylenol in pregnant women as a potential treatment for autism and the high-dose prescription drug leucovorin. What can people do to navigate these vague oceans? Doctors who care for children, adults and obstetricians who are looking for mothers with autism will face recommendations from the Trump administration’s health team and whether or not they will give the patient to you.
The Food and Drug Administration will notify physicians that acetaminophen use is associated with an increased risk of autism. Acetaminophen, often sold under the brand name Tylenol, has long been considered the safest option for managing headaches, fever and other pains during pregnancy.
The FDA also said it would remove leucovorin calcium tablets as a treatment for children and adults with brain folate deficiency.
Leucovorin, also known as folinic acid, is a folic acid prescription drug currently prescribed to combat the toxic effects of chemotherapeutic drugs such as methotrexate. It is also used to treat anemia.
The FDA said that some people with folate deficiency have developmental delays with autistic characteristics, including challenges such as social communication, sensory processing, and repetitive behavior.
Drugmaker GSK is manufacturing Wellcovorin, a prescription containing leucovorin calcium, and has confirmed it will submit an application to the FDA seeking to add brain folate deficiency as a potential new use of the drug. GSK no longer sells drugs, but the label change will allow popular drug manufacturers to sell the drug for new uses, GSK said.
“We have seen a tragic four-fold increase in autism over 20 years,” said FDA Commissioner Marty McCurry. “Children are suffering and deserve access to potential treatments that have shown promise.”
A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that in 2022, one in 31 people had autism. In 2000, one in 150 children suffered from autism.
Kennedy claims that unemission states are aware of the “autism epidemic” that has been fueled by “environmental toxins.” However, decades of research are less clear about what contributes to autism. Many scientists believe that genetics plays a role in combination with environmental influences. They also say that the increased incidence of autism can be attributed to changes in previous diagnosis and methods of diagnosis of autism.
Ali Neyman, an assistant professor of health policy and management at Harvard’s School of Public Health, said people who had different diagnoses or diagnoses in previous generations have been diagnosed with autism.
What patients can do to educate themselves about autism
Doctors say they hope that more patients will ask about vaccine safety, Tylenol safety and leucovorin as potential treatments for autism.
While family doctors want to fully understand what causes autism, the American Academy of Family Physicians said promoting “myths” about automation of vaccines and acetaminophenoutism is “distracting from research and resources that benefit people living with autism.”
Trump warned pregnant women to “fight like hell,” but he avoided taking Tylenol while pregnant, but many medical experts opposed the advice.
Marita Wills, CEO and medical director of the American Psychiatry Association, urged consumers to listen to doctors and professional healthcare providers.
The American School of Obstetrics has repeatedly stated that acetaminophen is safe for pregnant women. The American Academy of Pediatrics said there is no reliable link between childhood vaccines and autism.
Willis also said the FDA’s efforts to solve Leucovorin were premature.
“There are early studies demonstrating some promises, but we are at least three to five years away from using sound scientific principles to prove this in conclusion as a treatment,” Wills said.
“It is really important for patients to talk to their doctors, and doctors are receiving guidance from the Association of Health Professionals.
