LOS ANGELES – Former NFL star Mel Owens set the wrong kind of bachelor’s record by stepping into the “Golden Bachelor” controversy three months before the ABC’s advanced edition of the reality dating show begins.
Owens, 66, vowed to cut women over 60 on the University of Michigan College Football Podcast, repeatedly apologising for calling the comments “out of scope” and “mistakes.” He will again apologise to 23 contestants, ages 58 to 77, at the “Golden Bachelor” premiere (8 ET/PT) on September 24th.
A handsome, silver-haired sports lawyer and hopeful divorced father of the two who viewers will allow and watch the ride. “I tune and give me a second chance,” Owens tells USA Today. “Please give your own evaluation.”

“The Golden Bachelor” returned to Owens’ home in Detroit, where his father, Walter Owens, played professional baseball for the Negro American League Detroit Star and coached high school baseball.
The young Owens, the University of Michigan standout football star, was drafted in the first round by his childhood favorite team, the Los Angeles Rams, where he played for nine seasons and called up 26.5 sacks. The Rams and Football still play a major role in his characters today.
“You can’t strip the University of Michigan and La Rams from anything,” Owens says. “Soccer is regimented. You are a team player, you need to show up on time and work hard. All of this will be carried over.”
After Owens retired in 1989, he returned to law school and became a sports lawyer.
Mel Owens values his life with two grown sons who gave him a crash course on social media.
Owens has two grown sons Lucas, 20, and Andre, 18, after their 18-year marriage.
“They live mostly with me and I value that great father-son relationship,” says Owens. “Every morning, I’ll be with them before they go to school.”
The boys supported him in his “Golden Bachelor” quest and helped guide his dad into the world of Instagram, not pushing social media into the world of Instagram. “They took me to Tiktok and then to Instagram. I didn’t know how to do all of them,” says Owens. “My boy helped me. Two months ago I had four followers. I think I have more than four now.”

“Second Chance” Golden Bachelor has often acquitted himself since the scandal. Owens says he’s used to getting hits since his days in football. “I was constantly criticized not only by my fans, but by my coaches and teammates,” Owens says. “You take it because it’s your job.”
He does not search for Boobard online. “I definitely won’t dig into comments on social media,” Owens says.

Owens married Fabiana Pimental in 2002 and had two sons. The divorce proceedings began in 2020 and were finalized in 2024.
“It was a long marriage and it didn’t work out,” he says. “I still want her a lot, and I love getting married.”
What is his perfect date?
Self-proclaimed “romantic” is not bound by a single “perfect date.”
“I like to travel, it can be a perfect date,” says Owens. “And then, just being at home, relaxing, watching TV, reading, nothing, there are lots of perfect moments.
He’s not a big writer, but “I’m emotional.”
The first Golden Bachelor Jerry Turner is shed tears in almost every episode. But don’t expect Owens’ water supply. “I’m not necessarily a Cree, but I’m emotional,” he says. “But crying is a human emotion. It’s cataltic. It happens. It’s a good thing.”
He believes he has him
Owens says he had external sense recognition (ESP) since he was a child.
“It’s an exchange of energy,” he says. “The electromagnetic energy is being exchanged throughout. If you’re in line with it, you can feel it.”
This is useful in his Golden Bachelor Quest.
“When someone enters a room, you look at them and give them an evaluation,” says Owens. “I’ve learned to trust your intuition. It’s your sensory perception. You have a better understanding of human nature.”
Is Mel Owens looking for marriage in The Golden Bachelor?
Not necessarily, but definitely a new love. “Love is a good thing, fills your heart, makes you feel good and gives you a purpose,” says Owens. “I loved falling in love, and that’s my ultimate goal.”
Naturally, Owens doesn’t wear wedding bands or jewelry. Also, the dating show doesn’t give you clues as to what went down while filming.
“You’ll just have to watch the journey,” he says. “There are ups and downs, there are twists and turns. It’s just incredible what happened. It’s an adventure.”
