WASHINGTON – California Gov. Gavin Newsom called the Trump administration’s actions “authoritarian” and said he is worried about the absence of a presidential election in more than three years.
“We fear that we won’t be elected in 2028. I really at the heart of my soul – it means what’s going on in this country unless I wake up to Code Red, and I wake up calming down how serious this moment is.”
The Newspaper, one of the Democrats’ most powerful critics of President Donald Trump and the candidate for the next White House race, has blown up with the Republican administration taking “authoritarian behavior” amid nationwide crackdowns on immigration enforcement.
As reported by NBC News, federal agents arrested immigrants in courts and elsewhere across the United States, including Florida, and stripped them of due process protections elsewhere, including Florida. Family and immigration advocates say in part of the arrests, immigration judges could drop aggressive lawsuits against immigrants and facilitate the deportation process.
Newsom recently signed a bill that would prohibit local and federal officials from wearing masks while they are operating.
“I mean, if you jump out of an unmarked car and a van with a mask and try to grab me. I mean, by definition, you’re going to push back,” Newsom said. “And these are not mere authoritarian tendencies. They are authoritarian behaviors by authoritarian governments.”
White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson in a statement called Newsom’s remarks on the 2028 election “absurd” and “conspiracy theories.”
Trump previously said that it will not “probably” run for the third term in 2028. The Constitution limits the two terms of office that have been in office. Trump also proposed that Vance was “the most likely” heir to the Maga movement, but Vance said it was “too early” to consider the 2028 election.
Newsom also criticized Trump for pushing for rezoning efforts in Texas aimed at helping Republicans win five more seats in the middle of 2026. Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed the law on a map of Texas’ new legislative assembly in August.
In response, Newsom is leading the efforts of his own district in California to grant Democrats up to five new seats in the middle of 2026. Voters will consider Newsom’s proposal for November through voting measures.
Newsom previously said in an August 27 interview at Politico’s California Agenda: Sacramento Summit that Trump will try to continue to serve beyond the constitutional term limits in 2028, using federal agents to equip Republican supporters with future elections.
“I don’t think Donald Trump wants another election,” he told Politico moderators at the time. “I have 20 20 Trump 2028 hats that his people keep sending me.” Newsom did not elaborate on how he thinks the 2028 election will be cancelled.
