Living on Mars? Here’s what that big discovery means for humanity

The small rock patterns on Mars can have a major impact on humanity. This is what you need to know about life on Mars.

Searching for Life on Mars dates back about 50 years ago, with the September 10th announcement showing perhaps the most dramatic advances.

News: NASA’s patient rover has discovered potential signs of ancient microbial life on Mars.

The discovery represents “the closest we’ve ever seen to discover life on Mars,” Sean Duffy, acting NASA administrator, said in a statement announcing the discovery.

“Identifying potential biosignates on the Red Planet is a groundbreaking discovery and encourages understanding of Mars,” Duffy continued.

Still, discovery represents a moment of confounding.

Meanwhile, scientists have touted the news as a groundbreaking advance in answering ancient questions. Are we alone in the universe?

On the other hand, this discovery does not prove the existence of ancient life. Experts warn that more work will be needed to confirm these findings.

“If Mars had life, it would be extremely exciting for science,” said Lindsay E. Hayes, NASA’s senior scientist in Mars exploration, in an email. “In addition to answering one of humanity’s oldest questions about whether we are alone, it can affect how life occurs and evolves across planetary systems like our solar system.”

What was announced about Mars?

NASA announced at a press conference that samples of rocks collected in 2024 from the ancient arid riverbed in Jezero Crater could maintain evidence of ancient life. Reddish rocks formed billions of years ago from sediments at the bottom of the lake in Jezero Crater.

What do scientists think about the discovery of “life on Mars”?

Many in the scientific community have been somewhat familiar with these features since last year’s publication, but now there is a great deal of excitement in the publication of papers that solidify them as potential biosignatures. “This is a stage where the scientific community can actually delve into the findings and they are themselves involved as part of the scientific process,” Hayes said.

What’s going to happen now?

The next few years of science will focus on the specific results of this paper. She expects that this will include research that seeks to identify alternative ways to create the function measured here. In the long run, the best way to properly confirm these findings is to return the samples for analysis at the terrestrial laboratory.

What would happen if there was a life on Mars?

Hayes said that confirmation of ancient life on Mars would begin a series of new questions, such as:

  1. Life always begins, and are the conditions appropriate?
  2. If life was born on either Mars or Earth, could it spread to other planets through a normal process?
  3. Is life still somewhere on Mars today?

The surface of Mars is not habitable today, Hayes said. “Since the Viking Landers, NASA’s Mars exploration has focused on finding water, looking for habitable environments from the past, and searching for signs of past life, but there has been no purpose to find modern life on Mars.” (The Viking Landers investigated Red Planet about 50 years ago.)

“As we explore our solar system further and deeper into the underground of our planets, we hope we learn more, including things that have different possibilities in life,” she said.
