- Nissan Aliya has arrived as a 2022 model year to compete in the EV space.
- Nissan has prioritized the new EV, a redesigned leaf subcompact SUV with a standard operating range at a more affordable price.
According to Automotive News, Nissan is killing the nameplate of an electric vehicle on the market just three years later.
Japanese automakers are struggling to create best-selling electric SUV models to compete with their rivals from Tesla, Ford and Hyundai. Now, despite the model being on the streets for several years, it is removing the only production electric SUV for North America.
Most major automakers are entering the EV space with competitive products. Here’s why removing Aliya allows Nissan to regain its racing to make a bestselling electric car:
Nissan Aliya was cancelled in 2026
Nissan’s Aliya is a small, unsold electric SUV, and is part of its major rivals. According to the sales report, the company sold 9,345 Aliya units in 2024 and 11,619 units as of July. In contrast, Ford sold 22,234 Mustang Mach-E electric SUVs in 2024, and sold 21,785 units in the second quarter. Ford has gone through the sale of the 2024 Mustang Mach-E and put the rocket in the rocket.
Hyundai sold 18,728 small IONIQ 5 SUV models in 2024. According to the company’s sales report, as of the second quarter of 2025, 19,092 models were sold. Nissan’s small electric SUV is not the worst sales model in its segment, but it’s no secret that the company struggles to withstand car fares, mergers failures and the rise of global competition.
Is the Nissan Ariya a good SUV?
The 2025 Nissan Aliya starts at $39,770. It produces 214 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. The base model Aliya gains a driving range of 216 miles.

Ariya’s Edmunds review found that EVs have “outdated infotainment graphics” and “lower than average DC fast charging rates.” The BBC’s top gear featured the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E with high overall scores.
The Aliya has a comfortable interior and solid standard driver assistance and safety features, but it’s not the EV that turns things around for Nissan. Enter the third generation Nissan Leaf, one of the brand’s most audacious redesigns in recent years.
The Future of Nissan EVS: 2026 Nissan Leaf
Nissan’s next electric vehicle release is the new leaf model. The redesigned Nissan Leaf will be a subcompact, affordable electric SUV, smaller than Aliya. Starting at $29,990, this is much cheaper than Aliya.
According to Nissan, the 2026 Leaf S+ Base model has an estimated drive range of 303 miles. The latest EVs from Japanese car manufacturers are a better deal for most drivers in terms of pricing and practicality (driving range). Nissan will need to “cut down production plans” due to battery shortages, but is expected to be released in the fall, Reuters said.
Major automakers are making competitive electric vehicle production more important for companies such as Toyota to redesign their existing EV nameplates and make them more attractive (Toyota BZ). EVs like the Chevrolet Equinox EV and Honda Prologue have acquired steam based on a second quarter sales report from automotive research site Cox Automotive. Nissan’s new leaf is another opportunity for automakers to secure market share in the EV space, but is it competitive enough to bring the company’s victory?
