New York Governor Kathy Hochul approved democratic socialist Zoran Mamdani at the Mayoral Race in New York City on September 14, and on social media the city “deserves a mayor who will stand up to Donald Trump and make New Yorkers’ lives more affordable.”

The governor’s support was announced in the New York Times Opeda, where moderate Democrat Hochul detailed what led to her decision and conversations with state lawmakers. She is the latest well-known Democrat in favor of the 33-year-old Mamdani following his upset victory in the Democratic primary in June.

Mamdani’s shocking major victory over former governor Andrew Cuomo sent shockwaves during New York’s democratic establishment. Hochul initially refused to support Mamdani, who has worked to gain support from party leaders, including House minority leader Haekum Jeffries and Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer.

“In the past few months, I had a candid conversation with him. We had a disagreement,” Hochul wrote in Op-Ed. “However, in our conversation, I heard leaders share my commitment to New York where children can grow safely in their neighborhoods and where all family opportunities are within reach.

“Zoran and I will not look at everything. We do not expect from us. I reserve the right to always be honest and dispute and passionately argue,” she further wrote. “But I believe New York and New York City are at their best as we stand together against those who are trying to tear us apart.”

In response to her support, Mamdani said she appreciated Hochul’s “support for unity in our party and her work for standing up to President Trump, securing free lunch meals for children and expanding access to childcare.

“Governor Hochur has made affordable prices a centre of her work,” Mamdani said in a statement. “We look forward to fighting her to bring money back in New Yorker’s pockets and continuing her track record of building a safer, more powerful New York City.

New York Republicans respond to Hochul’s support

The Curtis Sliwa campaign criticized Hochul’s support on September 14, saying “the worst governor in America supported the worst candidate for the mayor.” Swawa, the founder of the Guardian Angels, a crime prevention organisation, is the only Republican candidate in a predominantly democratic city.

“They deserve each other. New Yorkers see backroom politics and know that Curtis Swawa is fighting for them, not for insiders,” said campaign spokesman Daniel Kurzina. “Curtis will become mayor this year, Elise Stefanik will become governor next year, and nonsense will finally end.”

Ed Cox, chairman of the New York Republican Party, shared similar sentiments, calling Hochul “the worst governor in America.”

“It’s no wonder Kathy Hochul’s New York continues to lead the nation abroad. New Yorkers are fleeing the Democratic Party’s worst tax and regulatory system and the public embrace of extremism,” Cox argued.
