FG’s Dabo Swinney won the game at Georgia Tech, hasn’t taken a timeout
Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney broke down a field goal that won the Georgia Tech game and explained why he didn’t use the timeout.
- Clemson’s No. 11 defeat to Georgia Tech is a new low for the team and is now considered one of the most disappointing in the country.
- Georgia’s overtime victory over Tennessee remains questionable about their defense, but keeps them at the top of the SEC.
- Several quarterbacks, including Michigan’s Bryce Underwood and Texas’ Archmanning, had remarkable performances with mixed results.
This is the 11th Clemson rock bottom. However, for now only.
Saturday’s 24-21 loss to Georgia Tech will drop the Tigers to another level. The loss to the Yellow Jackets on a 17-10 loss to No. 4 LSU and a sloppy 27-16 victory over Troy last weekend, the Tigers don’t portray as another unfortunate team. This is the most disappointing college football team in the bowl section ahead of other candidates for distinction such as Kansas, UCLA and more.
Another terrible start sets the tone. Clock Tuting Drive, which ended with field goal, led the jacket 13-0 midway through the second quarter.
Against Troy, the Tigers were able to surge forward in the second half. However, unlike a week ago, the Tigers coughed a 14-13 lead on a 13 play, 90-yard drive, capped with a two-point conversion, bringing Tech to the forefront 21-14 in 10 minutes. After Clemson tied the score with a short touchdown run, Tech drove 38 yards and set a 55-yard field goal for kicker Adam Barr over time.
Nothing is correct. There is no broader vision of Clemson’s desire to attack or defence. Klubnik rewinds the ball twice and is sub-pearl through three games. As a team, Clemson is a pedestrian.
Two losses in three weeks may not end the Tigers’ playoff hopes, but it appears very unlikely that this team will get back on track and run the table from here. What evidence is there from LSU, Troy and Tech to give you confidence that there is a conversion to the card?
Clemson, Georgia and Tennessee are leading the biggest winners and losers in college football action on Saturday.
winner
Georgia
It may take several more weeks to truly assess the deeper impact of No. 3 Bulldogs’ Electric 44-41 overtime victory over No. 15 against Tennessee. Was this just a day for the Bulldogs’ defense despite the fact that Tennessee owned the 21:29 regulations? If the attack has to do heavy lifting, is the Bulldog built to survive the gauntlet of seconds? Does Georgia have another gear that will unleash deep into conference play? (Kirby Smart hopes.)
Among these lingering questions, there are two certainties. For one, this is down as one of the top games of the regular season. More importantly, the Bulldogs need to stay above the SEC power rankings after adapting to Tennessee’s enthusiastic style and thrive. Generally speaking, victory in this series is not too special. Georgia won nine times in a row, losing only twice since 2010. However, the nature of victory strongly hints that despite having no real answers about defense and being one of the country’s most laidback environments, Georgia has more hints in the tank.
He offers key major credits for the coaches of the robust programs he’s building since being tentatively promoted early in the 2022 season. After winning seven games in the last two years, this is clearly his best team, a real threat to either beat the ACC or compete for a massive playoff bid. Schedules cannot be ignored. Tech ends the regular season by playing Georgia, but there are no other ranked teams, but travelling to Duke and North Carolina is not easy. At the very least, this is a team worthy of our attention and a poll spot for US LBM coaches.
Blythe Underwood
Don’t let Michigan win too much 63-3 against central Michigan, Michigan. However, the 616-yard total offense, 35 first downs and a stingy defensive play are major positives after last week’s defeat to Oklahoma and then the next red-hot Nebraska. The biggest point from this laugh was the performance of freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood, who threw 235 yards for 9.4 yards on a single attempt and had 114 yards and two scores on the ground. Wolverine must continue to make Underwood’s feet a big part of the attack.
Bill Belichick
Things haven’t gotten worse since their embarrassment against TCU in the season opener. It’s positive for the oldest coach in Major College football, Belichick, 73. Hey, there’s one more positive here. North Carolina is 2-1 after beating Richmond 41-6. Belichick has scored a record for the first time since the New England Patriots moved 7-6 on December 12, 2022 in a victory over the Ariona Cardinals.
loser
Tennessee
This is not a bad loss for Tennessee. Don’t say it may take weeks for the stab wound to sink. The volunteers only controlled the tempo and the game, handing things over to Georgia with some important mistakes. Kicker Max Gilbert missed his 43-yard field goal attempt to force overtime, and no one was bigger than the fake start flag on the final drive of the regulation. Still, the volunteers look like legal championship competitors starting Saturday. Because of a powerful attack that looks much better as Nico Iamaleava struggles to complete the winning UCLA pass. Joey Aguilar played incompletely, but still had 371 yards and four touchdowns for 10.3 yards per throw.
Archmanning
Manning’s play continues to undergo major scrutiny after a weak show in a 27-10 victory over UTEP. The redshirt sophomore went 11 of 25 for 114 yards on touchdowns and interceptions, with the 7th Texas continuing his very impressive run throughout non-conference play. Everyone knew Manning would give more attention than any other player in college football, but his play guaranteed the negativity surrounding his first three games as a full-time starter for the Longhorns.
Wisconsin
The chance Wisconsin defeated Alabama in the 18th inning came out when quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. was ruled out with a lower body injury. But be honest. Even if Edwards was at the center, the Badgers’ chances were barely present. While Danny O’Neill started off in his place and threw an intercept, the bigger issue was a non-athletic defensive play where Ty Simpson averaged 13.2 yards per throw. What made the 38-14 Finals not a big surprise is the latest statement on Wisconsin’s program under junior coach Luke Fickel.
Kent
Kent has almost beaten FBS opponents. And Mac opponents, less than that. But as expected, Woebegone Golden Flashes lost 31-28 to Buffalo after playing for over a minute and giving up a 76-yard touchdown drive. The program’s final victory went on to work overtime against the Bulls to end the 2022 season. After that season, Golden Flash has continued to play 22 games against FBS and 16 games in Mac play since losing former coach Sean Lewis.
