Used products certified as used: Which is better?

  • Most automakers offer certified second-hand options.
  • Buying without a certified second-hand label can reduce costs, but you’re probably taking more risks with your car purchase.

“Certified Used” may sound like a simple rebrand from a salesman, but the difference between certified and used cars is more than a smart wordplay.

That’s all guaranteed.

According to Brian Moody, executive editor of AutoTrader, if a vehicle was designated as an accreditation owned by an auto company, the vehicle passed a set of standards. Used cars purchased from neighbors or local car premises may work, but it is not “certified second hand” and does not amount to a manufacturer’s approval seal.

He said vehicles with frame or fire damage or coming from salvage will not be cut.

“You’re getting a minimal ‘this good thing’, but if you buy it from somewhere else, you don’t know,” Moody said. “It’s quite possible that I got a great car from my neighbor, but I have to do a little extra work just to make sure.”

Moody pointed out that reports on the vehicle’s history do not tell the entire story.

So, what are the advantages of a certified used car?

The car was examined.

“You take a very low risk in terms of the quality of your car, the history of your car, and the likelihood of problems,” Moody says. “It’s still in use, but you’ve eliminated a lot of risk.”

A consumer report states, “The vehicles purchased as certified China had around 14% fewer issues than other used cars.”

Additionally, there are perks depending on the manufacturer. This is an extended warranty, perhaps a new car financing, and perhaps a 3 month satellite radio.

For example, General Motors lists 172-point inspections of roadside assistance, scheduled maintenance programs, and 10 benefits offered over its certified second-hand vehicles, as well as additional warranty.

A simple internet search shows that most car manufacturers have their own certified second-hand programs, many of which have been around for years.

And the disadvantages of China that has been certified?

The main problem is cost. Moody said that paying an additional $2,000 additional fee would likely increase the value of the vehicle, such as at the next sale.

Still, Moody said that certified used cars can be used regardless of whether they are useful or not.

“I don’t think anyone has an answer. You can find good used cars and they can come from a variety of places,” he said.
