WASHINGTON – Vice President J.D. Vice President J.D. Vice President on September 11 will travel to Salt Lake City, Utah, to cancel previous plans to pay homage to the family of Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk and to visit New York City to honor the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The Vance will be joined by Second Lady Usha Vance.

The Vice President was a close friend of Kirk, a charismatic conservative activist who was fatally shot while speaking at an event held at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah on September 10th. The suspect’s Manhunt is still active.

President Donald Trump’s schedule for September 11th remains the same. He will still be attending the 9/11 observance event held at the Pentagon in the morning and travelling to New York City in the afternoon to participate in the New York Yankees Detroit Tigers baseball game at Yankee Stadium.

Vance calls Kirk “real friend” in honor of young activists

Vance paid a long tribute to Kirk, 31, to his personal X account late on September 10th. He said he formed a relationship with young leaders and sent a direct message after meeting him on Tucker Carlson’s television show.

The relationship, which began around 2017, grew into intimate friendships as former Trump skeptics bonded with politics. Kirk continued to introduce Trump’s eldest son, Don Jr., and other Magazine Power players to help Vance win the Ohio Senate race.

“Long before I committed a run (even inside my mind), Charlie let me talk to his donor at a TPUSA event. He walked me around the room and introduced me. He gave me honest feedback on what I said.” “He was friends and he was a good guy.”

Kirk campaigned in 2024 to convince Trump to place Vance as his running mate on his GOP ticket. For Vance’s three children, the public’s attention accompanied by the nomination and the presence of constant security was difficult, the VP said in his post. He leaned over to Kirk as his best friend.

“Charlie was constantly calling and texting, checking our families and providing guidance and prayers,” Vance said. “He’s not just a thinker, he’s an activist, and he’s turned big ideas into big events with thousands of activists.”

In a statement, Vance said that Kirk “exemplified the fundamental virtues of our Republic: an ambitious conversation and discussion of ideas” and that he worked to “strive the scope of America’s acceptable debate.”

He said his father of two was also a “great family man” and a “true friend” and was committed to Trump being re-elected and staffed in the federal government.

“You ran a good race, my friend,” Vance wrote. “I have that from here.”
