After 9/11, America received global support. Trump changed that.

From Argentina to the former Yugoslavia, even Moscow, the world has been in the United States since 9/11. Trump and time have changed that.

  • Almost every country in the world declared that it was standing with the United States in the wake of the 2001 September 11 attack.
  • Since then, the tragedy-forged alliance has been broken.
  • Trump’s trade diplomacy and belief in harsh tariffs have accelerated several ongoing global trends.

It is now the world of Donald Trump and a lonely place.

Twenty-four years ago, the first foreign leader to reach out to President George W. Bush in the wake of the devastating 9/11 attacks in New York and Washington, Russia’s new president, President Vladimir Putin, provided the will and help of sadness. The NATO Alliance first called Article 5, calling it an attack on all of them.

Almost every country in the world, from Argentina to the former Yugoslavia, declared it was standing with America.

Since then, the tragic alliance has been destroyed by the long wars in Iraq and the rapid upheavals in the Middle East, the revival of “America First” populism, and the sharpest US tariffs in almost a century, trading presidents and time passes.

That’s not a surprise. Over a quarter century, national interests change and foreign alliances change.

However, the anniversary of the most deadly terrorist attacks in modern history reminds us of how successful the global campaign against terrorism has been China’s rise as a US immobility among the countries that were closest partners, and how successful it has been by China’s rise.

Think of Canada, a friend since the end of the war in 1812. He is currently trapped in a trade war with his Southern neighbors. It’s become so bitter that Canadian bars have removed Kentucky bourbon from the shelf.

“It appears we’ve lost India and Russia.”

A week before the 9/11 anniversary, another indication of how time is changing, Chinese leader Xi Jinping had not only Putin but also India’s prime minister Narendra Modi – touting his intimacy with Trump at a Chamie meeting in Shanghai. It was my first visit to China in seven years.

In a social post of ironic truth beforehand, Trump asked XI to “please my warm respect for Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong un.

He then posted again. “We seem to have lost India and Russia to the deepest and darkest China,” he wrote. “May they have a long and prosperous future together!”

The president’s tone was chuckling, but he had acknowledged the gravity pull of India, the world’s largest democracy and the country Washington had long tried to nurture. On September 9, Trump announced upcoming trade talks with “my very good friend, Prime Minister Modi”, but the 50% tariffs that the US slapped in India have made those efforts tense.

To its surprising, North Korean and Iranian leaders also attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Conference. So did the people of their allies Egypt, Türkiye and Vietnam.

Trump is not responsible for long-term trends such as Beijing’s resolve to rival the US in global influence, or Putin’s evolution against established authoritarians with expandist ambitions.

However, he accelerated these trends and reversed others with his brand of trade diplomacy. With two non-consensual terms, his influence lasted for the president’s longest time since Franklin D. Roosevelt.

For the first eight months of his second term, Trump pushed for a rethinking of the NATO alliance. European countries have moved to increase defence spending and take away more leadership in Ukraine’s defense against Russia, assuming that the US role is no longer reliable.

Trump accused South Africa of alienating Brazil by defending the former president, attempting to overturn a legitimate election, and accusing South Africa of abusing white citizens. He ordered a military strike against Iran’s nuclear facility and a boat suspected of having a drug disorder born from Venezuela.

Now in power for 25 years, Putin has been annoying Trump by intensifying the war in Ukraine, without negotiating the peace that Trump promised during his campaign last year. In August, the two-leader summit in Alaska was shortened, with bilateral and trilateral talks nowhere on the horizon since Trump was told.

Giuliani was rejected and the Taliban returned

This year, on the morning of September 11th, the president will take part in observing a gloomy anniversary at the Pentagon, one of the places where hijacked commerve planes crashed. A total of nearly 3,000 people have been killed in the Pentagon in the countryside of Pennsylvania and, more than anything, the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York.

In a 20th anniversary USA Today/Suffolk University poll, most Americans said the attacks had forever changed lives in the United States.

Trump travels to New York for a Yankees night game, including a memorial.

Several things have changed over the past 24 years. I don’t have some.

The Yankees are currently competing for the American League pennant just like they did in 2001. Bush was a declaration of normalcy at Yankee Stadium, which ditched the first pitch in the World Series game a few weeks after September 11th.

Rudy Giuliani, who exalted as “American mayor” for leadership after 9/11, has been banned from practicing law in New York and Washington after spreading false information to try to overturn Trump’s defeat in the 2020 election. Trump announced he is planning to award the Presidential Medal of Freedom after Giuliani was injured in a car accident in New Hampshire.

The Taliban ruled Afghanistan even after the longest war in America.

And terrorism? It is still a global threat.
