Poland asks NATO to call Article 4 after intercepting Russian drones
Poland fired down a Russian drone that had entered the airspace. The country is in contact with NATO about its actions amid rising tensions.
WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump responded to Russian drone invasions into Polish airspace in a short statement that raised eyebrows after Polish leaders and other Western allies condemned their actions.
“What about Russia violating Polish airspace with drones? We’re here!” Trump said without elaborating in a September 10 post on the true social of his social media platform.
Polish troops fired down Russian drones that violated the airspace during a Russian air force attack on Ukraine, saying it was the first time NATO members have been involved in Russian military assets and their own airspace directly since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tass told his parliament that “we have been the closest to open conflict since World War II,” but he also said, “There is no reason to believe we are on the brink of war.”
In a statement, the Polish military said that Russia’s actions pose a “real threat” to hone its citizens. Poland has closed at least four airports, including Warsaw’s Chopin airport. They have since resumed.
Moscow denied responsibility for the incident, with a senior Polish diplomat saying the drone came from the direction of Ukraine. Neither Poland nor NATO have given a full explanation of what they suspect that drones are doing.
British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer said “I am deeply concerned about the wild attacks on Ukraine and the severely unprecedented violations of Poland and NATO airspace by Russian drones.”
Development in Poland failed to pursue the Russian-Ukraine war that Trump wanted after Trump’s summit with Putin in Alaska failed a second meeting between Trump, Putin and Ukrainian President Voldimi Zelenki. On September 8, Trump told reporters he plans to speak with Putin “quickly” with the aim of ending the war.
Trump has repeatedly threatened sanctions and other severe penalties against Russia, but has refrained from doing so despite imposing double tariffs on imports from India as a punishment for India’s import of oil from Russia.
According to Reuters, in the second half of September 10, Trump plans to speak to Poland’s President Karol Naulockey, a conservative nationalist and political ally that Trump hosted at the White House last week.
