Trump was eating at the Trump International Hotel in DC at the time, on a golf course in northern Virginia, but he hadn’t gone to other restaurants as president.
Trump declares victory over crime in Washington, D.C., protests from residents
President Donald Trump said the military would “stay here for a while” when he visited law enforcement officials in the capital.
WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump has visited the first DC restaurant he hasn’t owned since winning the White House and has said it is the safer capital.
The beneficiaries of Trump’s field trip were Joe’s seafood, Prime Steak and Stone Crab, just a few blocks from the White House. The menu features half a dozen oysters, about $24 from Maine, Cape Cod and Prince Edward Island. The slap red snapper costs around $47. Or, a pound Alaskan red king crab goes for $125.
Trump arrived with Vice President JD, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegses. Trump told reporters he was eating out to highlight Washington as a safer city. According to social media videos and reporters, he was greeted by shattered boos inside, with loud cheers from people across the street.
“We have no crime,” Trump told reporters September 2, before saying he might prove that by trying out the DC restaurant. “You can go and actually walk with your children, your wife, your husband, you can walk in the middle of the street. You’re not going to be shot.”
Trump declared a state of emergency a month ago to take over the metropolitan police station in DC. He also deployed hundreds of National Guard troops to enhance security.
White House spokesman Caroline Leavitt told reporters that 2,177 people have been arrested since the August 7 acquisition.
But Trump said he would like to work with Democratic mayors to combat crime in cities, including Chicago, which began strict immigration enforcement on September 9th.
“Yes, the President wants to work with anyone in this country who wants to end these horrible policies and bring law and order to our city,” Leavitt said.
The governor traditionally mobilised state state guards, but Trump was able to deploy National Guard forces directly to DC due to his unique position as a seat in the federal government.
Trump said he would deploy his troops to cities like Chicago and New Orleans, but would prefer to be asked by the governor.
“We work with governors of certain states who want us to be there as well as mayors of certain cities in the same state,” Trump told reporters. “I’ll probably announce it tomorrow.”
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker opposed the deployment, and Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry welcomed it. California Gov. Gavin Newsom continues to fight the development of federal courtrooms in Los Angeles.
Trump had previously been called the Trump International Hotel near the White House and then dined before he sold it. However, he did not try other restaurants like his predecessors Barack Obama or Bill Clinton.
