Federal safety regulators are investigating nearly 300,000 Chrysler minivans over reports of pilot malfunctions that officials say could lead to crashes.

On Monday, September 8, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that it had begun an investigation into the Chrysler minivan after reporting issues with the vehicle’s electric power steering.

According to the NHTSA, the investigation covers an estimated 287,000 vehicles and was prompted after the agency received nearly 100 complaints related to minivan piloting issues.

Which models are affected?

NHTSA research will affect vehicles for the following models and years:

  • Chrysler Pacifica: 2017-2018
  • Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid: 2017

The NHTSA reported that the steering system on some vehicles “expresses a sticky feeling” “especially when positioned near the 11 o’clock or 1 o’clock position.”

In many cases, the problem can cause oversteer conditions, which can increase the risk of crashes, especially at high speeds, regulators reported.

For more information about the probe, call NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
