Tom Hanks Award Ceremony discarded by a group of West Point alumni
The West Point Alumni Association has cancelled a ceremony honoring Oscar winner Tom Hanks, stating the need to focus on the “core mission” of cadet preparation.

The U.S. Military Academy alumni association in West Point reportedly cancelled an awards ceremony scheduled to celebrate actor Tom Hanks.
The NPR and the Washington Post report and the Washington Post report are respected as Hanks, who is expected to win the Military Academy Silvanus Sayer Award, for no longer respected. The Sayer Awards, according to a release on the Military Academy website, each year “exceptional citizens… exemplify personal devotion to ideals expressed in West Point’s motto, where service and achievements in the national interest are expressed.”
USA Today reached out to West Point and Hanks representatives for comment.
The decision to cancel Hanks’ ceremony, which has previously criticized President Donald Trump, follows a turbulent transition at the academy under the new administration.
Trump shaved the flip-flop with his post to the Truth Society on September 8, cancelling the academy and praised Hank for describing him as “awakening” and “destroying.”
“Our Great West Point (always grow bigger!) wisely cancelled the awards ceremony for actor Tom Hanks. A key move!” the president wrote. “We woke up and awake to receive a destructive, precious American award!!! I hope that the Academy Awards and other false award shows will review their standards and practices in the name of fairness and justice.
The Plug-Pick Academy shows an astonishing shift in tone from the original announcement in June. At the time, a post on West Point’s website recorded Hanks’ long career in both acting and activity, celebrating his contributions to the American image.
“Tom Hanks has done more for the active portrayal of American service members, for the compassion of American veterans, caregivers and their families, and for all the branches of the American Space Program and government.
“To have your first visit to the Academy is to embrace the honor that the Sayer Award is simply astounding. West Point’s legacy of leadership, character and service to the country is a powerful example for all Americans,” Hanks said in the release. “It makes sense and humble for graduates to be recognized by the institutions that have shaped the history of our nation through selfless service.”
