Do I need to disable autostart stop? What drivers should consider

Is this feature worth leaving or is it just a nuisance?

  • Automakers produce vehicles with standard driver assistance and safety features, and sometimes feel unnecessary.
  • The autostart-stop feature benefits certain types of drivers with certain settings.

Will your car’s engine be cut off every time you stop completely?

Auto Start-Stop is a vehicle feature that shuts off the engine when the vehicle stops to save fuel. As soon as the driver relieves pressure from the brakes, the engine will restart.

This feature may be more useful than you think, especially for drivers with gas gazlers. How much does Auto Start-Stop actually affect fuel economy?

Does Auto Start/Stop really save on gas?

Automakers have been working hard to reduce carbon footprint and produce more fuel-efficient vehicles for consumers. These vehicles do not reduce fossil fuels, resulting in driving the driver further in a single gas tank. The automaker has developed several innovations and features to save as much fuel as possible, including hybrid motors and special features that prioritize efficiency.

The Auto Start-Stop feature may not seem to have a big impact, but it can make a huge difference depending on the vehicle you drive and where you drive. According to Edmunds, drivers can earn 2-3 miles per gallon in the city using the car’s start-stop system. Multiply that 2 or 3 miles by tank capacity and you can easily get a driving range of over 20 miles in the city.

Tests by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) showed that the start-stop function of a car can improve fuel economy by 7% to 26%. Auto Start-Stop makes your vehicles more efficient, especially in cities with regular stop-and-go traffic.

Is a car start-stop bad for your car?

Automatic start/stop may be suitable for your vehicle’s fuel economy, but does this feature have negative side effects on your vehicle? “There’s sometimes a common misconception that these systems are bad for the engine or starter,” says Alex Knizek, associate director of automated test development at Consumer Reports. Knizek adds that the vehicle is “designed for this feature,” but that “may require maintenance or repairs under the road.”

This feature isn’t inherently bad for your car, but after normal wear and tear, you may need to take care of a professional mechanic. That said, fuel savings are worth the risk for drivers who want to squeeze out extra miles while driving in the city.

Popular vehicles feature an auto start stop

It comes standard with several new vehicles with automatic start-stop features for certain trims, including full-size trucks, small SUVs and more.

Vehicles with automatic start and stops

  • Ford F-150
  • Chevrolet Silverado 1500
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • Subaru Forester
  • Chevrolet suburbs
  • Chevrolet Taho

Many vehicles with start-stop cars are heavy trucks such as the F-150 or Silverado, or full-size SUVs such as the suburbs and Tahoe, which usually burn more fuel than smaller vehicles. The inclusion of this feature allows drivers of heavy vehicles to gain more fuel economy in the city, and compensate for sub-stellar fuel economy numbers.

Drivers can disable this feature to avoid normal engine shocks and noise nuisances at startup, but the benefits of saving gas are lost. It helps to save fuel and expand the range of your vehicle, but it can be too confusing to maintain it. Thankfully, it can be easily disabled using either a physical button or a touchscreen button.
