The first Social Security payments in September will be distributed to recipients this week, but those who previously overpaid by the Social Security Administration may see a lower benefit check.

In April, the Social Security Agency (SSA) announced that it would withhold 50% of recipients’ monthly checks to compensate for past overpayments issued.

The agency began issuing overpayment notices on April 25, 2025, and began withholding 50% of recipient benefits after about 90 days (or about July 24, about July 24) until the overpayment is repaid.

Here’s what you need to know about Social Security Payments this week:

Who will receive Social Security payments this week?

According to the SSA payment calendar, beneficiaries born on Wednesday, September 10th on the 10th day of their birth will receive monthly Social Security benefits on Wednesday, September 10th.

When will Social Security payments be sent?

Social Security benefits are paid primarily to older or retired recipients, but are usually paid on Wednesdays.

According to the SSA calendar, if the recipient’s birth date is between the first and tenth of the month, a payment will be issued on the second Wednesday of the payment month.

According to the SSA payment calendar, recipients born between the 11th and 20th will be paid on the third Wednesday, while recipients born after the 20th of the month will be paid on the fourth Wednesday.
