Volkswagen Vowg_p.de announced the concept of a new small SUV on Sunday as part of a push for automakers offering affordable battery powered vehicles amid a bigger competition on costs and innovation, US tariffs and moving consumer demand.
ID.Cross is part of the product product that Volkswagen Group, the largest European automaker, introduced around 60 models in 2024 and 2025, Blume’s chief executive said in a media preview ahead of the Munich auto show that begins Tuesday.
The compact electric SUV, which will premiere around the world in the summer of 2026, is expected to target clients eager to buy EVs, at prices ranging from 28,000 to 30,000 euros ($32,780 and $35,121).
“We have always faced major challenges,” Bloom said, citing strong competition, reduced demand in Europe, price wars in China, trade tensions, and import duties, which particularly caused a severe blow to the automakers Audi and Porsche P911_P.DE brands.
“But we didn’t restrain,” Bloom said regarding the group’s offering. This also includes the starting price of 25,000 euros and the starting price for the Cupra Raval and Skoda EPIQ SUVs.
European automakers are opposed to tough competition with China to bring affordable EVs to the market.
Focused on China’s major profits and lower car demand in Europe, Volkswagen has also launched a major cost-cutting program aimed at increasing employment of more than 35,000 people, along with painful capacity reductions in German plants.
