KYIV – Russia launched the biggest air attack of the Ukrainian war overnight on September 7, burning major government buildings in central Kiev and killing at least four people, including infants, Ukrainian officials said.

Ukrainian President Voldimia Zelensky said a barrage of drones and missiles killed four people, causing damage to the north, south and east of the country, including cities in Zaporisia, Krivii Lee and Odesa, as well as cities in the Smie and Chernichv regions.

“It’s a long-standing crime that has already begun, and an extension of the war,” Zelensky said in a post in X that he has issued a new appeal to allies to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense.

Shortly after sunrise, witnesses said that thick smoke could be seen rising from the burning top floor of the Maine government building in the historic Pechersky district into the clear blue sky.

Elsewhere on Kyiv, residential apartments were attacked and damaged, and dozens of residents wrapped in blankets gathering on the streets outside to investigate the damage to the house as rescuers fought to destroy the flames.

The attack highlighted the attack among allies who were encouraged by resisting the call for a ceasefire and strengthening ties with China.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has expressed growing dissatisfaction with Moscow since meeting Putin last month, but has so far resisted the challenge of harsher sanctions on Russia.

On September 5, he said he was still working on security guarantees in Ukraine, and would help end Europe’s most deadly conflict since World War II.

Kiev’s European allies have pledged to support Ukraine politically and militarily, but offers of specific support, including the potential for military forces on the ground, are still under discussion.

The biggest drone barrage of the Russian war

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Swilydenko said it was the first time in the war that Kiev’s major government buildings had been attacked, dealing a symbolic blow to well-protected parts of the city.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tass said in a post on X that the attack “has no point in trying to slow down a strong response to Putin and appease him.”

Russia fired 805 drones overnight and against 13 missiles, while Ukrainian defense units defeated 751 drones and four missiles, the Ukrainian Air Force said.

This was the number of drones that Russia has used to attack the country since Moscow began a full-scale invasion in February 2022.

According to the Tass news agency, the Russian Ministry of Defense has taken a strike over the Ukrainian military industrial complex and transportation infrastructure. Both sides deny targeting civilians.

Timur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military regime, said the infant’s body was pulled from a tile ble in the Darnytskyi district, where the four-storey apartment was damaged. He said the young woman was also killed in an attack on the district east of the Dnipro River.

The Interior Ministry said more than 20 people were injured in the capital. Air alerts lasted more than 11 hours in Kiev and surrounding areas.

Ukraine is targeting Russian energy

Swillidenko sought more weapons for Ukraine and the world to respond to Russian attacks.

“We’re going to rebuild the building,” Swillidenko said. “But we cannot recover lost lives. The enemy terrorizes and kills people all over the country every day.”

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense said a new meeting of Kiev’s allies will be planned for next week, with air defense and supplies for Kiev’s deep strike against Russia being discussed.

The Ukrainian forces attacked the Dolzva oil pipeline in the Briance region of Russia, causing “comprehensive fire damage” during the overnight attack.

This is part of a strategy targeting Russia’s vast energy complex, which is the financial backbone of the economy and helps fund the war.
