Toronto – A bundle of chicken and jelly was at Sydney Sweeney’s training table, preparing to play boxer Christy Martin. After the reception, the sports biopic “Christy” was received when it premiered on September 5th at the Toronto Film Festival.

Sweeney won a standing ovation – the real Martin, accompanied by her pooch, Champion, also won a transformational role that could have her be nominated for the best actress Oscar.

“Christie” follows the life of the title character, who won a West Virginia teenager in the 1990s over a championship boxer in the Toughman Contest, eventually landing on a cover of a sports illustration and signs with infamous promoter Don King (Chad Coleman). Outside the ring, however, Christy marries Jim Martin (Ben Foster), a trainer who hides and suppresses her lesbianism and manipulates her to physically abuse her.

“If you leave me, I’ll kill you,” Jim says again and again. And in the film’s most disastrous bloody sequence, he almost endures that promise.

Sweeney said to the festival crowd: “I thanked Christie for spreading her story and awareness.

The actress shed tears as she was talking next to Martin in the post-premier Q&A.

“You’re so inspiring, it was a dream to be able to have her by my side during this process,” Sweeney said. “But the scary thing is, they say, ‘Oh, I’m doing this right in front of my eyes.’ And I wasn’t sure. So she’s the best boxer in the world and has to hook and hit. It was a dream to come true as an actor, as a person, as an actor. ”

Sweeney also spoke about her transformation in the film. She trained three times a day for three months before filming began, working with a boxing coach, weight trainer and nutritionist.

Her meal consisted of “many Chickfill A, many, many, many, many, many smackers, many milkshakes, many protein shaking.” Sweeney recalls. “But it was incredible to be able to fully embody such a powerful woman. I felt even stronger. It was really exciting.”

Martin said Sweeney portrayed her as the fierce and proud knockout artist in the ring.

“Boxer Christy Martin was really just a persona. He’s very overblown and very selfish, but that’s not really me,” Martin said. “I’m actually very shy and reserved and want to help everyone who can do in the boxing world.

“So I have these two parts of my personality, so I think it’s why Sydney Sweeney does such a great job because she became this completely different person none of you expected. She wasn’t a beautiful, sexy Sydney. She was the tough and sturdy Christie in this film.

Martin’s post-ring career includes speaking out to support victims of domestic violence. After the posthumous incident involving her ex-husband, she said, “I made a covenant with God from my hospital bed. If he lets me live, I will help as many people as possible.” “In fact, I said one person before I died, and I was arrogant person, “No, I want to help one person every day before I die.”

“I hope this film does just that,” Martin said. “If anybody can make it, if the daughter of a coal miner from 500 towns in southern West Virginia can make it.”

Sweeney added: “I hope people are leaving and they are absolutely inspired by Christie.
