When he appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on September 2nd, the “Equalizer” actor shared that his name was originally declared differently to the way the public said it. Kimmel told Washington that in 1987 there were zero football players named “Denzel” and now there are four late-night host credits for the actor’s fame.
Washington agreed, adding that he is confident that many Denzels, named after him, were named after him because of the unique pronunciation of his name.
He said his father, Denzel Hayes Washington, Jr., was named Denzel Hayes Washington, Jr., after urged his mother, Renice, to pronounce his son differently.
“My mother would say ‘Denzil’ and we both show up,” he told Kimmel. “So she said, ‘Now you’re Denzel.’ That’s why we pronounced Denzel. ”
