After a three-year tenure marked by an increase in political scrutiny of his campus, Northwestern University President Michael Sil has resigned.
Announcing his resignation on August 4th, Shill will leave as he continues to tackle the nearly $800 million federal fund suspension fallout imposed by the Trump administration in April. Almost four months later, Big Ten Campus, just outside Chicago, eliminated 425 employee positions amid similar austerity measures at other universities due to changes in government policy.
Sil led the 174-year-old university during particularly difficult times. The massive hazing scandal has prompted the expulsion of Northwestern’s longtime most winning soccer coach, Pat Fitzgerald (and the lawsuit). The school reached a settlement with Fitze Gerard for an undisclosed amount before Sil resigned.
The 2024 campus demonstrations about the Israeli-Hamas War also attracted criticism from Congressional Republicans who accused Jews of Sil as not sufficient to prevent illegitimacy. Meanwhile, some onlookers saw Shil’s ability to attack contracts with protesters as a successful model of negotiation.
Like many other well-known universities, the Trump administration has withheld school research funds for months, accusing school administrators of violating federal civil rights laws in handling the 2024 protests. Some schools, including Columbia University and Brown University, have paid millions of dollars fines to resolve similar allegations and facilitate federal investigations to campus. University of Virginia President Jim Ryan resigned in June amid pressure from the Department of Justice.
Northwestern teachers urged schools not to “submit” to the White House demands.
In a statement, Sil said he will remain in his role until the interim president comes into effect. He described his tenure as one of “significant progress” and “extraordinary challenges.”
“In so many ways, Northwestern is on a stronger footing,” he said. “We also recognize that difficult issues remain, especially at the federal level. It is important to continue to protect the university’s research mission and excellence while maintaining academic freedom, integrity and independence.”
