The Powerball jackpot surged to an estimated $1.7 billion on September 4th, setting up another round of frenzy ticket sales ahead of the next picture on Saturday, September 6th.

When the numbers were drawn on Wednesday, September 3rd, there was no winner in the jackpot again. The Jackpot is currently the third largest in US history and the largest since it won $1.586 billion in January 2016.

According to the Multi-State Lottery Association, 162,032,212 Powerball tickets were on sale during the drawing on September 3rd, a 189% increase in sales compared to last week’s drawing at the $850 million jackpot on August 27th. The chances of winning remain astronomically low, with about one in 292.2 million people – the huge jackpot has many Americans dreaming of what they will do with the prize money.

Until Saturday night, no one knows who (someone) will win, but hopeful players will turn to the awards until drawing. USA Today covers everything you need to know about your odds, how to buy tickets, the history of Powerball winners and more.

Here is our latest coverage:

The following drawings will take place on Saturday, September 6th, just after 11pm. Winners can opt to pay the pension award, estimated at $1.7 billion, or the lump sum payment, estimated at $770.3 million, on the morning of Thursday September 4th.

The following drawing will be the 42nd, as the Powerball jackpot last won in May. According to the Powerball website, the current winning streak has broken previous records of most consecutive drawings without a jackpot winner, without a jackpot winner.

Powerball tickets are available for at least $2 at various locations, including convenience stores, gas stations and grocery stores in 45 states in Washington, DC, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. In some states, players can purchase Powerball tickets online.

Players must select six numbers. Five white balls from 1 to 69, one matches one to 26 to match the Red Powerball. To win a jackpot, players must match all five white balls with any order and Red Powerball.

People can choose their own numbers or enable them to select their computers with the “quick pick” option. You can also add “Power Play” for $1. This allows you to multiply double, 3x, 4x, 5x, or 10x wins on prizes other than jackpots.

According to the Powerball website, there is about one in 292.2 million people who will win a jackpot. Unfortunately, experts have discovered that you are more likely to be hit by lightning, fatally attacked by a shark, or killed by a metstone, an asteroid, or comet than you would win this jackpot.

The 10 biggest Powerball jackpots have all happened in the last nine years. The biggest award, the $2.04 billion Powerball Jackpot won on November 7, 2022, and the $1.765 billion victory on October 11, 2023, both won by winning tickets in California.

Among customers stopping by Speedy Mart in Collingswood, New Jersey on September 2nd, and for those who didn’t let the machine choose a random number, the secret formula for choosing a victory number seemed particularly like the dates of birth of the player’s children and grandchildren.

A 2023 Cambridge University survey found that players tend to choose numbers that have personal connections. Cultural influences can also play a role, with some numbers being considered good or bad in various traditions.

“Players are personally believing in situational availability numbers that are meaningful and attracted to numbers at the heart of the selection form,” the author writes. “Frequent players avoid winnings from recent draws, while rare players chase after them. The combination of numbers is formed in an aesthetic eye, and players tend to spread relatively evenly within the range possible.”
