WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump said he will award former New York mayor, Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

Trump made the announcement in a post on True Society on September 1, calling his longtime ally and friend Giuliani “a great American patriot” as “New York City (and) as equally great American patriots.”

The recognition comes after 81-year-old Giuliani was hospitalized following a car accident near Manchester, New Hampshire. There he suffered from fractures of the thoracic vertebrae, multiple lacerations and each other’s cont bones, as well as injuries to the left arm and lower leg.

Trump hadn’t said he was planning to formally present the presidential Medal of Freedom to Giuliani. “Details on the time and place to follow,” the president shared.

Giuliani, the Republican mayor of New York City from 1994 to 2001, was known for leading the city by promoting strict criminal policies from city halls during the September 11 terrorist attacks. He ran a failed campaign in 2008 to help the Republican presidential nomination.

Giuliani later became Trump’s advisor during his first term as president. He helped Trump’s lawyer to promote unfounded claims of voter fraud and other conspiracy theories after the 2020 presidential election, and falsely claimed it was stolen from Trump.

Giuliani was rejected in 2024 as he practices laws in New York and Washington, D.C. for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. Giuliani was among 18 people, including Trump, who was charged in Georgia for his efforts to overturn election results in that state. The incident stagnated after Trump’s 2024 election victory.

As part of the legal settlement reached in January 2025, Giuliani agreed to suspend the slander of Ruby Freeman, two Georgia election workers, and daughter Wandry Moss, who were falsely accused of stealing the 2020 election. It came after they won a $148 million ruling in the honour and loss case brought against Giuliani.

In May, Trump named Giuliani’s son, former New York Republican governor candidate Andrew Giuliani, and leads the president’s task force at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the United States prepares to host an international event next year.
