Volkswagen Vowg_p.de has extended its “factory cloud” partnership with Amazon Web Services for another five years, said the German automaker on Thursday that it is deploying the use of artificial intelligence to improve production and reduce costs.
The company has partnered with Amazon.com AMZN.O’s cloud computing services unit to create a digital production platform or DPP, according to Volkswagen, which is already in use in 43 locations in Europe, North America and South America.
Globally, Volkswagen has over 114 production sites.
“Our ambition is to become a global technology driver in the automotive industry. To this end, we are consistently digitizing and networking our company across all areas,” said Hauke Stars, CEO of Volkwagen, in a statement.
Volkswagen plants connected to cloud platforms could work more efficiently, for example by optimizing the interaction of complex processes in vehicle assembly, the statement said.
The company, undergoing a massive overhaul to reduce costs, estimates the group’s overall savings of tens of millions of euros as a result of these systems in the medium term.
