More people are becoming allergic to meat and dairy products, especially in Martha’s vineyards.
The number of mites is stable, but the risk of disease is rising
Although black-leg mites in New England and New York have not exploded, the number of mites carrying disease-causing pathogens has risen sharply in recent decades.

Poppy seed-sized pests are turning meat lovers at Martha’s vineyard into herbivores.
The surge in the island’s lonely star tick population has rapidly increased alpha paralysis syndrome, a severe allergy to red meat and other animal products. Mite, It’s also increasing elsewhere in the US, allowing you to communicate life-threatening allergies in one bite.
And this state is changing the way people eat in popular Massachusetts tourist spots, among many other places.
Mufinrabu, chef and owner of a vineyard food truck that you enjoy my vegan, said he saw more people in the vineyard looking for plant-based food options for alfagal. At the Martha’s Vineyard Fair in mid-August, people who have never come to the truck looking for cheese or Mayo said, without realizing that they are vegan.
“They tell us, ‘I have an alphagal,'” Love said. “A lot of them have a hard time finding a restaurant they really trust, so it’s like, ‘We’re never going to eat.’ ”
What is alphagal syndrome?
Alphagal is a sugar molecule found in most mammals, including cows, pigs, and sheep, but it is not human. Lone Star ticks can be transferred to humans through saliva when eaten by animals and when bitten.
People with alphagal syndrome are allergic to lean meat such as beef, pork, and lamb. Some people are allergic to dairy products such as gelatin and other animal-derived products.
According to Mayo Clinic, symptoms of this condition appear 2 to 6 hours after eating meat with the alpha gal molecule, ranging from mild to life-threatening.
Some of the most common symptoms include:
- Stomach pain and nausea
- Hits and itching
- Swelling of the face and throat
- shortness of breath
How common is alphagal?
Over 110,000 suspected cases of Alpha-Gal have been identified between 2010 and 2022, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, the agency said the actual number of cases could be up to four times as many times as possible.
Historically, most commonly appeared in the South, East, and Central America, where Lone Stars live. Stephen Rich, director of the New England Center of Excellence of Vector-borne Diseases, said that the population of Arknid parasites has become increasingly common in New England over the past decade.
In 2020, the two tested positive for Alfagal at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, spokesman Gregory Matisse said. In 2024, that number rose to 523. This year’s results are not available yet.
Dr. Karen Casper, director of emergency medical care at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, said more people have visited the emergency room since the beginning of the summer to remove tick bites and mites.
Cases have also been reported in the coastal areas of Cape Cod, Maine, New York and Long Island.
“There’s clearly a northerly movement and an inland movement away from the coast,” Rich said.
Why did you see the rise in the tick of the lonely star?
Scientists say that solitary tick populations of stars are thriving in the northeast as white-tailed deer populations rebound. Mites live and feed deer, especially during insect nymphs and adulthood. According to Massachusetts deer harvest data, almost 100 square miles of Martha’s vineyards have an estimated 55 deer per square mile.
“The breeding grounds are more abundant than ever,” Rich said.
The lonely star tick is particularly aggressive and actively hunts human prey, Rich said. They are also found on well-maintained lawns than other types of mites.
Is there a treatment for alphagal?
Currently, there is no treatment for Alpha-Gal syndrome. According to Mayo Clinic, abstinence of lean meat and dairy products is the most effective way to prevent illness for people with conditions.
People who have experienced a severe allergic reaction may carry an epinephrine autoinjector such as epinephrine to stop anaphylaxis.
Only way to prevent star mites bites
It is impossible to find the lonely star tick. Adult women grow to the size of apple seeds and have small white spots on their backs. It can also bite larvae, which are translucent and pinhead-sized.
Rich, who teaches microbiology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst University, said people living in areas where ticks are common should always have a “general attention.”
He recommended:
- He wears long pants tucked into his socks as he walks through a grassy area. This isn’t ideal beach outfit, but he said it’s something people should consider when passing through the dunes.
- Spray the pesticide permethrin that repels mosquitoes and mites on clothing.
- A repellent for aparing insects with chemicals containing DEET and picaridin on your skin.
