KYIV, Aug. 28 (Reuters) – Russian forces launched a massive overnight drone and missile attack on Kiev, killing 10 people, wounding 38 people and damaging homes and other buildings in seven districts, Ukrainian officials said Thursday.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the attack that killed a child provided the Russian world’s answer to diplomacy in US President Donald Trump’s efforts to end the war.

“Russia chose ballistics instead of the negotiation table,” Zelensky said in X, calling for new sanctions against Russia. “I choose to continue killing instead of ending the war.”

Kyiv city officials reported at least 38 injuries as search and rescue operations are ongoing, and emergency services put out the fire and sifted through tiled bleeds on the destroyed building.

The explosion illuminated the night sky in the capital during air warnings, lasting for more than nine hours, with clouds of smoke covering the sky as drones roared overhead.

The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia has defeated 563 of the 598 drones launched in a nationwide attack and 26 of the 31 missiles.

The Air Force recorded hits in 13 locations, and debris fell in 26 locations.

“Unfortunately, the Russian style is typical of attacks,” wrote Timur Tokachenko, head of Kiev’s junta, in the telegram.

“Targets systematic, ordinary residential buildings, combined strikes from various directions.”

Russia, which denied targeting civilians, has intensified airstrikes in Ukrainian towns and cities far from the frontlines of the war in recent months.

Ukrainian officials listed a number of damaged buildings, including several high-rise apartment blocks.

In the Danitsky area, an eastern suburb, a five-storey building had been partially destroyed, Tkachenko said, and rescuers were searching for trapped residents in search of tiled rubs.

Emergency crews are working on the aftermath of attacks on more than 20 sites in the capital, he said.

Separately, Moscow’s defense ministry said that Russia’s air defense system intercepted and destroyed 102 Ukrainian drones targeting at least seven regions overnight.

In the overnight attack, Ukrainian forces attacked the oil refineries in Affipsky and Kybissivisky, according to the Ukrainian drone commander.
