SYDNEY – Australia said on August 26 that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese would banish Iranian ambassador to Canberra after he accused Tehran of carrying out two anti-Semitic attacks in major cities in Sydney and Melbourne.

Since the Israeli-Gaza War began in October 2023, Australian homes, schools, synagogues and vehicles have been targeting anti-Semitic vandalism and arson. Australia’s security agencies had gathered credible information that the Iranian government had directed at least two attacks, Albanese told the news briefing.

“Iran tried to hide its involvement, but Asio credits it with the attack on Sydney’s Lewis Continental Kitchen on October 20th last year and the attack on Melbourne’s Adas Isla El Synagogue on December 6th.”

Australia’s security intelligence agency is likely to have directed further attacks by Iran, he added.

“These were amazing and dangerous acts of aggression organized by foreigners in Australian soil,” Albanese said. “They were trying to weaken social cohesion and spill discord in our community.”

Australia has halted operations at Tehran’s embassy, and all of its diplomats were safe in a third country, Albanese added that his government will designate Tehran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization.
