- The NFL’s roster cut deadline is 4pm on Tuesday.
- But the team isn’t waiting until the last minute, but some actions have already taken action over the weekend.
- Some backup quarterbacks and previous high-draft picks could be on thin ice for each team’s final roster.
For many NFL teams, Tuesday’s roster cut deadline is perhaps the biggest hurdle left before regular season preparations begin in earnest. However, for hundreds of players, retraction can mark painful edges of the line.
Established starters and early draft picks are not afraid as the team usually sets the roster of the first 53, but the culmination of the preseason schedule inevitably leads to some disappointment and difficult decisions. Some long shot bids are officially over. However, those trying to rub a spot at the end of the roster have signed up for a temporary lifestyle, which may be the first or latest in a series of set folds. However, hope remains as the concept of finality through reduction will soon be wiped out by additional waiver movements, trades and training squad deals in the coming days, weeks and months.
With several teams making the cuts, check out all the latest on the prominent moves with the biggest roster moves on the USA Today Sports live blog.
Kenyon Green is not part of the Philadelphia Eagles’ coordinated offensive line after all.
According to CBS Sports, according to CBS Sports, the team was exempted just five months after being traded to the team by the Houston Texans in exchange for safety CJ Gardner-Johnson.
Greene, 24, was the Texans’ No. 15 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft for Texas A&M, but the 6-4, 323-pound blocker struggled during his tenure in Houston.
Eagles executive vice president and general manager Howie Roseman was busy over the weekend and rebuilt his offensive front backup and signed offensive tackle Fred Johnson on a contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars while rebuiltting offensive front backups and sending offensive guard Daryan Kinnard to the Green Bay Packers.
The Miami Dolphins’ re-shuffle secondary will not provide support from the veteran added in late July.
The team is releasing Mike Hilton, the cornerback agent told ESPN.
The 31-year-old Hilton was signed to increase the depth of the slot after Kader Kohou, the sole return starter in the secondary, suffered from the anterior cruciate ligament in the cleft. A longtime standout for both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengal, he has garnered 13 interceptions over the past eight years, starting 56 games in between.
Fifth round rookie Jason Marshall Jr. could be lined up to take over the role of Nickel.
Offensive tackle Jalen McKenzie was also exempted, according to ESPN.
Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes don’t expect Detroit Lions players to continue the twist in the wind as their team plans to make the majority of the cut by day by the end of Monday.
“Tomorrow may be a couple that probably isn’t the last moment,” Campbell said Monday. “But it is, it is, it is – it is not easy about it, and there is nothing worse for them than us, meaning it is difficult for us, but I am not here.
The most closely monitored spot in Detroit is at the backup quarterback. There, Journeyman Kyle Allen appears to be leading Hendon Hooker, a 2023 third-round draft pick that struggled and modestly this summer. After the preseason finale, Campbell appeared to have kept the door open to the team moving in some way from Hooker.
“How much development do you think there will be?” Campbell said. “We’re talking about Hooker now, how much development do you think there are still? Do players need a change in the scenery from time to time?”
Dallas Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer created an upset he’s grateful for when bossman Jerry Jones suggested last week that the team could throw a curveball or two cut-down times.
“After playing on Friday, we’ll sit down and make some decisions about the entire roster,” Schottenheimer said last Monday. “There’s probably some surprises from some of the mocks out there in terms of, ‘Hey, I thought I was sure this guy was going to make it.’ ”
While there appears to be a lot of mystery to the team, which sat a huge number of starters and key contributors in the finale, 2023’s first round defensive tackle Matzi Smith fought amongst the running people. Schottenheimer said Saturday that the positions that will most trouble out Dallas decision makers are cornerbacks, wide receivers, linebackers and defensive sides.
However, it’s not surprising here. Offensive Tackle Rael Collins, the former offensive line link pin who signed with the team just this month, was cut down on Sunday following multiple reports.
Howie Roseman never puts at a key moment in roster building. This offensive mentality was fully on display this weekend as the Philadelphia Eagles executive vice president and general manager implemented numerous moves.
The most notable decision may be a reworking of his quarterback room. With backup Tanner McKee still on the sidelines with a finger injury, Roseman wielded the Minnesota Vikings and trade to win Sam Howell. It was bought on Kenny Pickett’s trade on Sunday, but led to the official ouster of Thompson Robinson, who appeared unlikely to stick after fighting for the fifth round rookie Kyle McCord and the estimated third job.
Shiro Sanders literally fought in Tampa. The Buccaneers on Sunday waived the safety of the undrafted rookie free agent from Colorado a day after Sanders was banished for throwing tight end Zach Davidson against the Buffalo Bills from Saturday’s preseason finale.
Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles made clear his stance on Sanders’ actions and called it “unforgivable” in his post-match remarks. But Bowles largely complements his young defensive back, leaving the question of whether he could return to the Bucs practice squad if he wasn’t charged.
“Shiro is very aggressive, very young and very hungry,” Bowles said last week. “He can play on the box, run away and give 100% to a special team.”
The Cleveland Browns are never short of quarterback news.
On Sunday, the team announced that it had released Tyler Huntley along with three other veterans and 17 abandoned players.
However, it appears that the Browns will maintain their quarterback quartet — starter Joe Fraco, veteran Kenny Pickett and rookies Dillon Gabriel and Chedure Sanders — are on a 53-man roster, with general manager Andrew Berry showing the same during the finale against the Ross Angeles Rams in his team’s preseason finale.
“To be honest, that’s not a big decision for us,” Berry told Chris Rose and Joe Thomas on the Browns broadcast, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.
Linebacker Jamin Davis’ attempt to revive his NFL career was another scratch. Washington Commander’s first round pick for 2021 was released by the Jets on Sunday.
Davis, who re-signed New York in March after being argued for the exemption by his team last December, failed to latch Aaron Glenn and Co. despite some promising flashes of light in the summer.
The Jets also abandoned six other players on Sunday: QB Adrian Martinez, De Michael Fletcher, OT Liam Forandel, Te Zack Kuntz, DB Tanner McCalister and RB Lawrance Toafili. Six more were abandoned Saturday: CB Mario Goodrich, OT Samuel Jackson, TE Neil Johnson, WR Demare Miller, DT Fatruma Malba and WR Ontarian “Porky” Wilson.
The Atlanta Falcons have said goodbye to 12 players, including players that may come as a surprise to many.
Defensive lineman Morgan Fox was released on Saturday despite $3 million guaranteed on a two-year deal he signed with the team this offseason.
Count the Los Angeles Rams among teams that don’t wait until Tuesday and begin the cut.
Sunday’s team announced they have released linebacker Tony Fields II and abandoned the other 10.
By 4pm on Tuesday, August 26th, all 32 teams will need to reduce their active roster to 53 players. However, the official words of some teams’ movements may not come until a while later.
NFL teams will need to insist on abandoned players as part of a league-wide roster cut until noon on Wednesday, August 27th. Once these claims are resolved, the club will begin filling out the training squad.
