What is Playboy? A magazine started by the late Hugh Hefner
Playboy was an American men’s lifestyle and entertainment magazine founded in 1953 in Chicago by entrepreneur and publisher Hugh Hefner. It focused on revealing photographs and articles about women called “playmates” or “bunny.”
For decades, the Playboy brand grew into a global media and entertainment empire, opening the Playboy Club, filming TV specials, and celebrities have made their appearance on the cover. According to The New York Times, the magazine saw a distribution rate of 7 million at its peak in 1971.
Hefner passed away in 2017 at the age of 91. In 2020, the company announced that it would be suspended from printing operations and only online. However, they announced that the “annual print edition” will return in 2024.
From the beginning, the brand attracted criticism and controversy, “oversexualizing women and promoting a misogyny culture.” Former playmates and employees also came out to share stories of alleged abuse and sexual harassment by Hefner and the company.
In response to a 2022 documentary detailing the horrifying accusations against Hefner and the company, Playboy issued a statement saying, “Playboy today is not Hefner’s Playboy.”
“We are a strong supporter of these women and the individuals who have made progress in trusting, verifying and sharing their stories,” Playboy said in a statement. “Listening is very important.”
Where is the new Playboy Global HQ?
According to a press release, the new global headquarters will be located in Ribani Miami Beach, the development of 1691 Michigan Avenue.
The move says it will establish a content studio to support Playboy’s growing network of creators and produce original multimedia content across digital platforms such as podcasts, photography and other media ventures.
“We are excited to welcome Playboy’s global headquarters as Miami Beach continues to establish itself as one of the world’s leading cities, conduct business and continue to run business,” said Joseph Magazine, Commissioner of the City of Miami Beach, about the move.
“This move is expected to bring a significant number of paying jobs to our cities, and will strengthen our commitment to fostering innovation, cultural vitality and economic growth in collaboration with one of the most iconic brands in history.”
New Playboy Club to Miami
In addition to the move, a new Playboy Club will open in Miami Beach.
The club details the “world-class restaurants bring the brand’s famous heritage to one of the world’s most lively destinations, along with exclusive members-only spaces inspired by the renowned Playboy Mansion.”
According to the Miami New Times, Miami was previously home to the Playboy Club from 1961 to 1985.
